Thanks, commie - I get many of those emails (more these days than for foreigners killed in Nigeria leaving millions or winning lotteries). There is a hyperlink that looks like the bank's address but if you put your cursor over it you'll see that it aliases to another website with the bank extension. I have never known anyone being fooled by this or those other scams before - sorry, Batty.

Other than the way Commie has outlined, the other way to fall victim to this sort of theft is run some dodgy software (often disguised as something innocent), which will surreptitiously install a 'trojan horse' on your computer. Given the right (and unfortunate) conditions this can enable a hacker to do anything from browse the contents of your hard drive or capture your keystrokes.

Not too recently I had my ebay account broken into (several fraudulent auctions were submitted in my name). I found a trojan running on my computer that had not been detected by AVG, the software I was previously using. I suspect I may have caught it from some dodgy Chinese P2P TV software. Or perhaps I was caught out entering my password on a computer in an internet cafe abroad and it was captured. Or perhaps a forum or website I joined was compromised in some way.

Fortunately I was able to use a secure computer at work to immediately change all my passwords without any further damage being done. I was extremely concerned because I used that very same password for everything else, including my email. There lessons are obvious: use different passwords for important things, use security software, never download dodgy software and be careful when using internet cafes abroad.

I was very lucky and this episode made me appreciate just how important security is to my work and other business. As a result I no longer run Windows, which is a scandalously and inherently vulnerable operating system. Ditching Windows is the only way to be truly secure.

My personal favourite which catches the er 'unaware' is advanced fee fraud.

You're selling you car on say Ebay for £2,000 . Someone agrees to buy it and then sends you a cheque for £5,000, asking for you to send a cheque back to them or to a third party for the £3k. You agree, take the cheque, wait til he money appears in your account 3days later hand over the car and then send of £3k. A few days later the cheque bounces. You've lost your car and £3k.

Now why would anyone think it was resonable to accept a cheque for more than the amount and give change? The whole point of cheques is being able to transfer specific amounts to specific payees. Why wouldn't this individual right their own cheque to a third party? Why would they want to write a check for more than they need then get one back off you which they'd have to wait to clear? HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!

In which case I applaud the amount of money in the account - I've got a similar amount overdrawn I reckon :wink2:

not really. It's a question of your internet security software and a lot of awareness on your part.

It doesn't matter how good your software is if you are stupid.

I'd contend that Firefox is inherently safer than IE, although would agree with the 'stupidity' comment :)

Raven, the reason you get loads is because you answer them. Their auto system then note your address as real ... and responsive. So they come back in bucketloads.

Tempting as that is all advice is to tag them as spam & bin them.

It's not often you find you have lots in common with Batman.

But today I'm a victim of crime :( Some Romanian thief has got their grubby mitts on my money. I haven't had my cards lost or stolen so they've cloned the account and made loads of tiny transactions over the weekend to almost £500 in Romania - I don't know why my card decided to go shopping over there. Stopped all my accounts just in case and having new cards and PINs issued. Just painful as I go on my hols in 10 days and have about £5 about my person at the moment!!!

This may stop be sending a dozen roses to Jussi this morning.

Couldn't pay for my meal in the pub last night due to no card available and doing that annoying girl thing of not carrying any cash.... but fortunately, the landlord paid for me and I have to drop the cash off tonight after the game - otherwise I'm doing his washing up for the next week.

Got my crime number from the police this morning, and just feel very grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
