Two or three clubs that we visited were bigger than us? Hmmm, let's have a look. Are you referring to the match-fixing black and whites from Turin, with their stunning 2 European Cups and 3 Uefa Cups? A successful side, definitely, but surely of the same scale, and not any 'larger' than us? Or perhaps you meant the Russian oligarch's plaything from West London? Of course, they have a stunning domestic and European record compared to the reds, don't they? Yeah, Chelsea are a 'massive' club, and Liverpool do truly live in their shadows... Oh, perhaps you meant the teutonic might of, er, Bayer Leverkusen, who are also clearly a wonderfully large and historic club. Oh, but we didn't draw there, did we, because we won 3-1...Dave Sutton's barnet wrote:Presumably Senor Humility will already have pointed out that Liverpool are small compared to the two or three clubs at whose stadia they ground out negative dull draws en route to Istanbul?
Or were you talking about the European powerhouses of Deportivo, Olympiacos and Monaco from earlier in the competition?
Yeah, there were clearly three sides bigger than Liverpool that we met en-route to Istanbul

i think you'll find Juventus are a slightly 'bigger' club than Liverpool, even if they have won less European cups than Liverpool, which is of course the only method of comparrison when looking at differing clubs 'stature'........
jesus christ.
are you saying Liverpool is a 'bigger' club than Manchester United because of your 5 european cups....?

This is the problem I have with Liverpool supporters. Being a big club and a good team is completely different. Pool were a "small" club in comparison to Juve, AC Milan Chelsea on the pitch that season. They did play some dire football en route to winning the Champions League, this surely can't be argued.blurred wrote:Two or three clubs that we visited were bigger than us? Hmmm, let's have a look. He's a prick & Liverpool, even if they do well, no longer have the general respect they used to have & that won't change while he's there.

Remember it well. The year before 'plucky little Bolton' had gone to try & play football & were rolled over 3-0. This 2nd time Ian Greave's said "what didhexpect ? ... I'm sick of losing & then hearing managers say what good guys we are " or something to that effect.CAPSLOCK wrote:This is nowt new

It all depends on your definition of 'big' really, doesn't it? I'd argue that pedigree (ie history of success) is part of that. You could go on other factors, of course, but that's really up to each individual. Does stadium size come into it? Attendances? Transfer fees paid? Wage bill? Domestic success? European success?Dr Hotdog wrote:i think you'll find Juventus are a slightly 'bigger' club than Liverpool, even if they have won less European cups than Liverpool, which is of course the only method of comparrison when looking at differing clubs 'stature'........

I know it's difficult to be objective when talking about opinions like this, but in terms of European football to say that Liverpool are small (compared to just about anyone) is garbage, in my opinion.
As for whether we are bigger or smaller than United, it depends on your basis of comparison. If you're talking about domestically then it's a close-ish call, but history can only take you so far. Their recent record is second to none and I'd say they're bigger than us domestically (notwithstanding their success 'off the pitch' in terms of building a huge stadium and huge following, generating vast amounts of cash and spending £20m + on more than one occasion). When it comes to Europe? Nope, wouldn't agree with that for a minute.
Yes, so if you ask were we the best side in the competition that year, I'd say no. If you asked whether we played the best football in the competition that year I'd say no. For God's sake we had Djimi Traore at left-back! But that's not what this topic, or the comments made by Benitez, or the comments to which I originally replied to were saying. What they were implying was that Liverpool were not a 'Big Club' compared to those sides that we met en-route to Istanbul, in the same way that Benitez has intimated that Everton are not a 'Big Club' in comparison to Liverpool. I still affirm that to say Chelsea/Juventus/Leverkusen/Deportivo or whoever are 'Big Clubs' in comparison to the most successful side in English football history, domestically and on the continent (and the only English side to have won any European trophy this decade, which we've done twice) is horse-shit.Dr.Karl wrote:This is the problem I have with Liverpool supporters. You know what makes a 'big' business or a big person ??? ... it's having time for the smaller person.blurred wrote:It all depends on your definition of 'big' really, doesn't it? Go out & win, play hard ... but do not insult the opposition. Don't condescend to them either. Just a bit of respect ... a bit of humility ... a small recognition that this could be you.
But Rafa doesn't get that, does he ?

Fair enough, if that's your definition of big then that's fine. I think you'll be struggling to find any teams to whom that applies, but so be it. Mourinho, Allardyce, Ferguson, Wenger... great sportsmen one and all, I'm sure you'll agree...bobo the clown wrote:You know what makes a 'big' business or a big person ??? ... it's having time for the smaller person.

However, being "big fry", I expect you treat the lower leagues with contempt and agree with Jose, who wants "Chelsea B" to play in the CCC.

So they're smaller? Yet you still played for a draw?blurred wrote:Two or three clubs that we visited were bigger than us? Hmmm, let's have a look. He hasn't used it for a while but when we used to go and play on the counter attack at Old Trafford and continually win 1-0 he used to flip his demented Scottish lid.cowdrill wrote:funnily enough the only manager of a top 4 club that doesnt use this excuse is Ferguson

I know Liverpool is a big club, but when Benitez infers only small clubs play for a 0-0 is ridiculous. Liverpool, a big club, have played for 0-0's under Benitez. Benfica away last season, a bigger club playing for a 0-0 at a small club.blurred wrote:

Liverpool? Play on the counter? In other words, defend until an opportunity presents itself? How very dare you!
I'm sorry C>D (and Blurred) but there's no way Benitez can come out of this without looking hypocritical. And Christ knows I'm no Everton fan.
