Whistler has an average annual snowfall of 30 feet according to the website. I have been checking the resort where I am going skiing and they had a light dusting of snow the other day - 4 inches. A light dusting , that would have brought this country to a halt.
People haven't got a good word for you, but i have T**T.

Yeah I got an email of my mate in Quebec and he was saying that he hopes that by the time I get there in March the snow will have improved!! Maybe it's just too cold to snow?

There hasn't been a lot of snow this year here, I'm afraid commie. We had a green Christmas in the city and only one major fall. Of course it will be better in the mountains and they do have snow making equipment in extremis.

Always loved that statement.

Like it's too wet to rain, or too sunny to be warm.

According to Stats Canada (allegedly) the greatest average annual snowfall in Canada is 1433 cm at Glacier National Park in BC. This is about 47 feet. I was having trouble renconciling the data because the site I originally looked at claimed Environment Canada stated it was 1433 mm! On reflection even Montreal has more than 1433 mm! Apologies for any confusion - 30-40 feet is fairly normal in the Rockies and Kootenays.

Except unlike your examples it happens to be true. Artic air generally means the bluest of skies and the brightest of sunshine - it needs to get warmer to snow. Really.

Or put more scientifically:
One phrase that is heard from time to time is that, "it is too cold to snow today". In actuality, earth's troposphere is not too cold to snow but rather it is "too dynamically stable to snow". Dynamic stability may be present due to low-level cold air advection, a lack of upper level divergence, and/or a lack of low level convergence. Also, if dynamic lifting does occur it may not produce precipitation that reaches the surface due to low relative humidity values in the lower troposphere.

The ingredients for snow are: (1) a temperature profile that allows snow to reach the surface, (2) saturated air, and (3) enough lifting of that saturated air to allow snow to develop aloft and fall to reach the surface. In a situation when it is said "it is too cold to snow" there is in reality not enough lifting of air that causes snow to reach the surface.

which is all well and good but the clouds that form the precipitous environment are not formed in the area where they actually "snow", rather they are created elsewhere - as with all clouds, and wind blows them to the place they snow.IIRC

Well there is such a thing as cross-country skiing - no ski-lifts or big hills required.
