Who is the best player you have ever played WITH or AGAINST
....and this can be any sport -
in footy I played with a couple of lads who now play for Bury, and played cricket with Brad Hodge and against Flintoff in my time, opened the batting with Hodge, needless to say he was amazing and I was turd.

As a youngster I played against a few lads who went onto become professional footy players. The best was probably Paul Moulden who scored a shedload against us and still ran rings round me 20 years later when I played against a rather more portly version.
"Get your feet off the furniture you Oxbridge tw*t. You're not on a feckin punt now you know"
Tough question really..
Probably AGAINST would be a young lad called Gawain Jones - who is currently the 13th best chess player in Britain, aged 19. I've also played against a few of the other top 50, one of whom is nearly a qualified Grandmaster but Jones is ranked highest at the moment.
I got a draw by the way.
WITH I'm not sure... I'm usually the best on any team I'm in *cough*

Played against Gary Riddell in the school seniors team who went on to play centre half for Dunfermline, and wwas a Schoolboy International at the time.(I think he was on the Dons' books but they let him go) He scored twice in the first half, and I got ripped for not tracking back and marking him (I was centre forward), so I stuck to him like a dog with a bone second half and the lazy git hardly moved out of his own half.
Of course I never touched the ball either
P.S. Our coach was the school PE teacher, father of Peter Nicol now world #1 squash player. He used to take on the best two seniors at doubles badminton by himself and whipped their arses every time.

Played football with a lad called Glenn Morris, who's now the keeper for Leyton Orient - stood out an absolute mile even at a young age as being a fantastic player. Struggling to think if anyone else from my footie team/league 'made it' as a pro...
Been involved with a few county/international cricketers - Min Patel and Matt Walker spring to mind, and a couple of South African U20s players and the like.

I have played golf with some top amateurs who are fairly big names in the esoteric golf world, but are not well-known otherwise.
I was coached by David Llellwelyn for a while (and played with him once), who did a few things of note in his career such as winning the world cup of golf for Wales with Ian Woosnam and I think he still holds the European Tour record for the lowest first round - a 60 in the Biarritz Open in 1988.

I was at school with and played against Jim Tattersal and Mark Cox (tennis) and Malcolm Gregson and Brian Barnes (golf). This caused me to give up tennis and retain my amateur status in golf. Ian Balding - horse chap - was also there but I stayed away from the stables sharing Oscar Wilde's opinion of horses.

I played against Mick Bennett, once. I was well chuffed because he didn't get past me once.NumptyNumbNuts wrote:Mick Bennett, went on to play for't Trotters, now summarises on Tower with NobEd.
Also, as a boy of about 10, I caddied for Tony Dunne up at Dunscar. Does that count?

May the bridges I burn light your way

Jon Hardiker (played for Morecambe youth when i was in the youth league) is the only one who I played against who made it anywhere....was at Stockport and Oldham I think...
I'm friend of a friend of one of the UK's top squash players (may be number one I'm not sure)...I'm sure i could challenge him to a game and walk away victorious one day

Played WITH Paul Mariner ... well, he was leaving the team as I joined it & we crossed by about 2 months. He joined Chorley & then on to Plymouth (for whom he scored a goal AND an og against Bolton, whom he supported), Ipswich & Arsenal. Bolton tried to get him from PA for £100k but Ipswich came in for him & they were some outfit back then.
In truth, a better player in the team was another guy, Gary Cooper, who 'only' made it at Rochdale, Crewe, Southport, Wigan (then) etc. To us he was a vastly better player.
Best against was a then rather old & rotund Francis Lee who was guesting for (I think) Rossendale in agame I was playing for Horwich RMI. He played at the back & only came up-field once. He scored a 30yarder & then trotted back to the defence.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
