Should/Will Britain invade Iran?

If they don't release the hostages?

If they were Yanks, Bush would already have stormed in, no doubt.

We're pulling troops out of Bosnia, just use them. Or sent SOTWA. He'll sort 'em oot.

So you're advocating sending a few troops into Iran just like that to bring out fifteen sailors who might well have been illegaly trespassing in Iran territory? You want a war on our hands, try it. We just have to hope the government can negotiate a peaceful solution. If they can't, the consequences might be disastrous for everybody. It was only a monitor patrol that went in, not the bloody Ark Royal; surely an appology for trespass would resolve this?

The east is a cauldron of dynamite just waiting to kick off. Iran is not Argentina.

We'd bray em anyway. Send Andy McNab in. He's always got an opinion.

(For what it's worth, I believe they'll release them when it's proven they were illegally kidnapped)

The British Government is absolutely convinced that they weren't trespassing. It's right that we should only deal in facts and not the daft propaganda games being played by the Iranians.

Ummm.....I believe the British government I truly do. This is a stunt being played out by Iran. However, the US and Britain were both convinced of WMD as well, we don't have much standing in the world when it comes to the truth right now.

We should be saying -

We appreciate that this stretch of water has been subject to dispute for some years, however, we were acting under the authority of the Iraqi government in a policing action. As such we acted on their definition of territorial waters and maintained that guidance. That this area is disputed is a matter betwen the two local Governments and not the UK. If any offence was caused by the presence of UK forces in those waters then diplomatic avenues were open to Iran, through wich the matter could have been resolved. It was not and is not the intention of UK forces to enter Iranian sovereign territory.

There is a slight difference between this and the Falklands. The location of the islands was not in dispute and Argentina perpetrated an act of war. Here the question of sovereignty is not in dispute, but merely the location of the event. Going to war or rescue attempts would not be helpful here - remember Jimmy Carter's attempts to rescue the embassy hostages? I imagine the individuals will be released when the propaganda value is used up. Hopefully it won't be four years like the last time.

This is a pile of shit.

1 We were acting under a UN mandate, and yet the Iranians are saying they may not release the female sailor if we involve the UN

2 We have GPS which states we were 2 miles INSIDE Iraqi waters, the Iranians were the aggressors

3 The Iranian foreign ministry want to release the prisoners, but they are held by the Imperial Guard who are upset because of the way Britain have reacted.

I don't pretend to have the solution but someone needs their heads banging together.

By the way, I don't think we should apologise if we were in the right. The propoganda that would generate for Iran amongst their neighbours would reverberate for years

It'd be intersting to hear the viewpoint of one of our Iranian posters.

Just remember he's an Armenian Christian and not a member of the Imperial guard. While I agree it would be nice to hear from one of our Iranian posters, they do have to be a little circumspect in offering political views.

I just had this vision of tw*ts in bowler hats frog-marching him off to a desserted part of the Reebok (North Stand Lower) and charging him with 'crimes against her Imperial Majesty, the Persian oik'
