If I were the Iranians I wouldn't be holding them all in the same place. You might get to one of them but then you have to get out again. You can't exactly land a Chinook in down town Tehran. They aren't some tin-pot African reigime.hisroyalgingerness wrote: best bet is to get some form of intelligence on where they are and storm the feck
As soon as word spread of any rescue effort the others would probably be marched out for a bullet in the back of the head.
Unfortunately many people still believe that we are some kind of superpower in the world.
WE ARE NOT...
We are a small Island who many many years ago were an Empire.
We are fighting on too many fronts at the moment, and I know from personnal experience that we are taking a heavy toll in Afghanistan and Iraq. (75% of the casualties never get reported)
If every man, woman and child "invaded Iran" we would all just fit into a small corner of the Country unnoticed.

If every man woman and child in Iran were grouped together you could probably fit them inside Tehran's borders. They ain't all terrorists.davroduk wrote:Unfortunately many people still believe that we are some kind of superpower in the world.

No. We should not go to war in Iran. The question should be, what are we doing in Iraqi waters in the first place?
You see Mr. 'Gauleiter' Blair, when you go around formenting wars by being a bit of a fibber, you might get a bit more than you bargained for. Boys and wolves come to mind.
Let's hope the lads and lass come home safely.

The most worrying thing is not the fate of these 15 people, as appalling as this situation is.CAPSLOCK wrote:Theres a lot of sense posted on this thread, but

Before Mussolini and Hitler ever did anything too serious on the international scene, they did quite a bit of testing the water first - a few stunts just to test the resolve of the international community so they could predict more accurately what would happen when the stakes were higher. Of course what they discovered was that the fledgling League of Nations had no teeth at all.
For me, and I say this without really understanding the complex mechanics of how Iran is run, this incident could well be a precursor to more serious activities in the future. As such, CAPS is right when he says that appeasement is not an option now.
On the other hand, as Finlayson says above, storming an urban Tehran location would be impossible. I can think of no military option that wouldn't deliver a net loss of more than 15 lives. Full scale war with Iran might happen at some future point, but if it does, it won't be over 15 people.
All of which seems to leave the options looking pretty limited. As vacuous as it sounds, 'firm diplomacy' is just about all we can do.

What we were asked to do by the UN?InsaneApache wrote:No. We should not go to war in Iran. The question should be, what are we doing in Iraqi waters in the first place?

I don't disagree with the rest of your sentiments but I would like to see some evidence to back up this statement.davroduk wrote:we are taking a heavy toll in Afghanistan and Iraq. (75% of the casualties never get reported)

If you mean Afghans's or Iraqi's .... you may be right.Zulus! I don't think we could wash over Brit's or Yanks who die. There's usually a bit of a fuss, in case you haven't noticed.
Or maybe we send out family-less orphans who no-one would miss.
The US would be only too willing to deal with Iran ... excpet they've hardly been successful with Iraq, yet, now have they ???
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
