THE GREAT WHITE DEATH!

Post by Soldier_Of_The_White_Army » Tue Jun 12, 2007 9:58 pm

MY GREATEST FEAR IS ALSO MY BIGGEST OBSESSION. I THOUGHT I'D SHARE.

WARNING - THIS POST CONTAINS GRAPHICALLY INTENSE IMAGES AND FOOTAGE OF GREAT WHITE SHARKS ATTACKING AND IN SOME CASES FEEDING. THEY MAY NOT BE SUITABLE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN

If you really want to get into the mood first, click here::D

IF YOU ARE STILL HERE, THEN PLEASE SCROLL DOWN INTO THE DEEP!

...............................................................................THE GREAT WHITE

......................................................Image

Oop's sorry, wrong one

Ahem, right, let's try this again.

.......................................................................THE GREAT WHITE

.....................................Image

...............................................................................Great White Shark Specs & Stats

...............................................................................Scentific Name: Carcharodon Carcharias
...............................................................................Family Name: Lamnidae

...............................................................................Average Tooth Size: 2"
...............................................................................Average Weight: 4000 lbs

I will say at this point that there is a huge amount I would like to say about this magnificent creature, but due to thread space I shall keep it as brief as possible.

SO THAT SCARY JAWS FISH JUST COMES UP AND EATS YOU THEN?

The white shark is a macropredator, and is active during the daytime. Its most important prey are marine mammals (including, seals, sea lions, elephant seals, dolphins) and fish (including other sharks and rays).

Marine birds and sea otters are commonly found having suffered injuries from encounters with white sharks, but are rarely eaten by them. Great white sharks assess the energy value of prey in the first bite. If the prey doesn't have enough energy value to justify the energy needed for a full-scale attack, the shark releases it. If however the great white perceives the prey to be energy rich, it will give a devastating, powerful bite and wait for the prey to bleed to death. White sharks swallow creatures without chewing them, and can swallow objects half their size.

I'm sure most T-W members have watched the begining of 'Jaws' when the woman was pulled under. Though this is one way a Great White attacks, it isn't it's normal one. The Great White is an ambush predator, and you are more likely to be taken ten foot out of the water as this 4000 pound pure killing machine strikes from below.

......................................................Image

Were you to be wearing a mask and looking into the water below, this is probably what you'd see:

......................................................Image

I must point out that it is very rare to actually get a Great White to smile for a picture! :D

A simulated attack on a surface swimmer (below). The shark thinking the object to be that of a seal or sea lion attacks from below and behind, the preliminary bite being enough to cause the animal to bleed to death or drown. The shark will then take it's time and consume the meal in a matter of mouthfuls. Don't worry this diver is only a wetsuit filled with seaweed.

......................................................Image

SO IF WE AREN'T IT'S FAVORITE CURRY, WHAT DOES A GREAT WHITE EAT?

Sharks are important predators in the marine ecosystem. Their favorite prey are seals and sea lions. As juveniles they eat fish, and rays. When they become full grown they eat marine animals such as whales, seals, dolphins, large tuna fish, sea otters, and dead animals that they find floating on the surface. In order to catch its food a shark will go along the sea bottom and look for shapes at the surface. If it sees something similar to the shape of a seal they charge full speed. They ram the prey and give it a first bite all in one motion, which stuns and injures the prey. It then disappears and allows the prey to bleed to death. When it’s certain the prey’s dead it begins to feed. Sharks don’t chew their food, they just rip it into mouth-sized pieces and swallow it whole. A big meal can last a shark up to two months.

OH SO A GREAT WHITE LIKES TO HAVE A NIBBLE FIRST, NOT TO BAD THEN!

Hardly! A lovebite from a Great White can have devistating effects. Before is a link that will show you some of the victims of a Great White's nibble:

WARNING THE FOLLOWING LINKS SHOWS GRAPHIC PICTURES THAT IS NOT FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!

WHAT ABOUT THAT CAGE THINGY, THERE PRETTY SAFE AREN'T THEY?

"You go in the cage, cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark's in the water, our shark. ."

- Quinn talking to Hooper from the movie 'JAWS'

Yes, shark cages are very safe, not to mention some of the sites you get to see of this beautiful creature!

^^^This is is actually one of my favorite pictures

Image

What I want to know is, who's taking that picture?

Want to cage dive yourself? Well here you can experience it from the comfort of your armchair:

I'M ACTUALLY GOING TO PUT A WARNING ON THIS, CALL ME A WUSS, BUT SOME OF THIS FOOTAGE PUT THE SHITS RIGHT UP ME!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L3PluNR5 ... ed&search=

THAT LOOKS LIKE ONE POWERFUL MOTHERFXXXXX!! I'M GONNA STAY IN THE SHALLOWS

Aye, like that'll help! Great Whites are more dangerous and attack more in shallow water then in the open sea. Here's an example:

March 4, 1985 was when Shirley Ann Durdin, a 33-year-old with four children, lost her life to a GW in Peake Bay, Australia. She had been snorkeling in water about 7 feet deep - equivalent to the deep end of a residential swimming pool - when she was fatally attacked by a GW estimated by witnesses to be 20 feet long. The first hit was a gory strike, the fish biting her in half. By the time Mrs. Durdin's would-be rescuers could get to the site of the attack, all that could be seen was the victim's headless torso. After a moment, the GW returned and took it as well. It was the first fatal GW attack in South Australian waters in over 10 years and the first time ever that an Australian victim was known to be eaten.

THAT'S IT! I'M NEVER SWIMMING IN BLACKPOOL AGAIN!

That would be a very good idea! But only because you are more likely to be attacked by a floating turd then a Great White in that sea!

The great white shark is found mostly in temperate seas throughout the world's oceans. It makes infrequent visits to cold waters and has been recorded off Alaska and Canada.

Great whites can be found along the coastlines of South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, California to Alaska, the east coast of USA and the Gulf coast, Hawaii, most of South America, the Mediterranean Sea, West Africa to Scandinavia, Japan and the eastern coastline of China and southern Russia.
The white shark lives mainly in the upper part of the water column, near the shore. However, it ranges from the surf line to well offshore and from the surface and to depths of over 250m (775ft). This shark commonly patrols small coastal islands inhabited by pinnipeds (seals, sea lions and walruses), offshore reefs, banks and rocky headlands where there is deepwater close to shore. The white shark usually cruises either just off the bottom or near the surface.

I HEARD A RUMOUR THAT A GREAT WHITE CAN ACTUALLY FLY!

Not far from the truth, though it is known a breaching. Check out these stunning pictures:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jR2BA24o6s

WOW, SO YOUR SAYING WE SHOULD GO OUT AND KILL ALL THESE WHITE DEVILS!!

Image

No we bloody shouldn't!

While the species is viewed by some as an invincible killing machine, Humane Society International's Nicola Beynon points out that this is a flawed perspective. "Contrary to its reputation as an invincible predator, the great white shark is considered vulnerable to extinction&Humans present a far greater threat to the great white shark than it does to us," said Beynon. The species is slow to grow and late to mature, she added, which makes it difficult for populations to bounce back from the depredations of fishing.

AT THE END OF THE DAY THERE IS A FAR MORE DEADLY KILLING MACHINE THAT SKALKS THIS EARTH THEN THE ONE WE HAVE SEEN ABOVE, AND THE THAT CREATURE IS MAN!

The Great White shark has earn't it's right to survive!

We should leave the Great White alone.................and pray he feel's the same way about you!

Don't think you're safe, wherever you are. SOTWA's post reminded me of an article I read some time ago so I thought I'd see if I could find it on line. Here it is:

Embarrassingly, I have a totally irrational fear of Sharks. Swimming in the sea around Santorini last month, I nearly had a panic attack because I got thinking about sharks. In fact, my fear is so irrational, I actually started to get scared and had to get out of the deep end of a SWIMMING POOL in Tenerife a couple of years ago. Seriously, that's how ridiculously irrational it is. I regularly have terrifying nightmares about them too.

I think I must have been far too young when I first watched Jaws.

I would suggest there is nothing irrational about a fear of sharks per se. The irrationality comes of being afraid of swimming for fear of ebing attacked by one.

I have the same fear of sharks, even some of them pics above sh*t me up. I refuse to swim in the sea or any areas of open water on the off chance there is one around, I can swim in a swimming pool and nothing else. I'm not even sure where my fear comes from, its more then likely watching jaws very young.

I absolutely love sharks. (Very afraid of them as well) If a documentary comes on TV, then I am hooked for the duration. Great work SOTWA! They are magnificent creatures, and should be left alone.

That image is the one that gets me the most, its just an evil looking creature. I watched a documentary on them that stated a shark wouldn't even need to bite you to kill you, it can do that simply by swimming into you at speed. I just hate them, I once went through a sea life centre up to the end where you got to walk under a tank filled with sharks and other fish, I just turned round and walked back through to the entrance. I just find it strange that with so much danger on land the only thing I fear is out at sea.

which is pretty much about right. It is estimated that sharks have evolved little in the last few million years, as they have no predators and have reached a level of efficiency that means they have reached a point of genetic equilibrium.

You are right you have a completely irrational fear of sharks.

After all it's the crocodiles you really need to be scared of.

Correct, thought to be a desentant of the now extinct (I hope!) Carcharodon megalodon. Which was a little on the big size:

Image

Thought to have died out when whales moved to colder climates, leaving it without enough food in the sea to justify the energy taken to catch it. Since then the Great White has been almost untouched by evolution.

If there was a megalodon somewhere out there in the deep (almost impossible!) it would certainly be brown trouser time!

Here's it's bloody tooth for crying out loud!!

Image

It was not a fish that was used to chewing!

Here's a few pics to give you an idea of it's huge size:

When my son (then 11) was sitting with his baseball teammates while the coach was laying down the law and lecturing the kids in a loud voice about their various inadequacies. He concluded the tirade with a rhetorical "Any questions!". There was only a moment's silence before my son, who had been watching the Discovery Channel, piped up: "Did you know that you are seven times more likely to be attacked by a cow than by a shark?"

As I hung my head in shame I noted at least it was a question. So for those irrationally afraid of sharks, my advice is to stay away from cows.
"If you cannot answer a man's argument, all it not lost; you can still call him vile names. " Elbert Hubbard.
