Absolute legends in the jazz world. Ella was the queen of song. The "z" was just a typo in the excitement; maybe I'm not tired yet, that's when the z's appear.Bruce Rioja wrote:My mum's seen Ella Fitzgerald in concert. Also, some guy called Oscar Peterson.TANGODANCER wrote:Just watched and listened to the "Legends " show on TV. Tonight was Johnny Dankworth and Cleo Laine, next week Ella Fitgerald. Good stuff.

Oscar is often back in his home town (he still has family here) and used to be relatively easy to see either perform or just have a beer with - haven't heard much of him recently and think he may be ill - he has to be over 80 now.Bruce Rioja wrote:My mum's seen Ella Fitzgerald in concert. Peterson, Basie, Ellington, George Shearing, the stuff of music legend. All depends what floats your boat but the big band era was magical. I still get a kick out of hearing the trumpet solo in Perez Prado's "Cherry Pink Mambo" (which I listened to tonight) or the trombone in numbers like Billy May's "Main Title Theme. Wonderful stuff. Billy May and Nelson Riddle did a lot of Sinatra's backing.Montreal Wanderer wrote:Oscar is often back in his home town (he still has family here) and used to be relatively easy to see either perform or just have a beer with - haven't heard much of him recently and think he may be ill - he has to be over 80 now.Bruce Rioja wrote:My mum's seen Ella Fitzgerald in concert. Did one of his Sportsmens dinners a couple of years ago. His taste in dress hadn't improved much; had a black and white jacket on you needed sunglasses against.General Mannerheim wrote:Sportsmans dinner tonight, special guest FRANKIE FRANKIE FRANKIE FRANKIE WORTHINGTON!!!

Ask him to tell you about THAT goal. I bet it's been a while since he told that story.General Mannerheim wrote:Sportsmans dinner tonight, special guest FRANKIE FRANKIE FRANKIE FRANKIE WORTHINGTON!!!

Meanwhile, I'm listening to Echoes by Pink Floyd (side 2 of Meddle) as per a different thread.

why is when you meet your legends you are usually dissapointed?General Mannerheim wrote:Sportsmans dinner tonight, special guest FRANKIE FRANKIE FRANKIE FRANKIE WORTHINGTON!!!

his speech was good, clearly a script performed many times - one thing i remember he said was that he went for a pint with kenny dalglish, there was a sign behind the bar that said 'happy hour' so kenny f ucked off!
but i was more upset that he was on orange juice! frank worthington ffs! fair enough but he just didnt seem interested, i suppose these dinners are ex footballers bread and butter, and he must have done thousands of em?
the whole room did get the 'OH FRANKIE FRANKIE' goin when he came on.
after frank, the comedian came on, nobby styles' son no less - comic genius, one of the best acts ive ever seen! frank didnt think so tho, he got up and f ucked off home right in he middle of it. and that was it. so ive no pics, no autographs no nothin.

Now that's interesting, because I've seen Nobby Styles' son do his own after dinner speach and it was one of the best that I've ever seen. He was both funny and interesting at the same time because he was a pro-footballer himself, predominantley with either Doncaster or Rotherham and had to live with the constant comparisons (his uncle is Jonny Giles, to boot).General Mannerheim wrote:after frank, the comedian came on, nobby styles' son no less - comic genius, one of the best acts ive ever seen!
I saw Worthy do his after dinner speach in the old Burnden Park Supporters Club when this whole footballers-as-after-dinner-speakers first kicked off around 15 years ago and he was brilliant. He was as nervous as a kitten and it was all very fresh, he even needed cards with bullet points on. Then, I saw him last season after a pre-match lunch in the Premier Suite, tired, and just going through the motions with the exact same material. Hey, ho!
May the bridges I burn light your way
in the queue to get in the MEN Arena last night some Southern prick was stood behind me complaining that England rugby chap Martin Johnson was asking £8,000 to speak at an after-dinner bash on Valentines Night.General Mannerheim wrote:why is when you meet your legends you are usually dissapointed?General Mannerheim wrote:Sportsmans dinner tonight, special guest FRANKIE FRANKIE FRANKIE FRANKIE WORTHINGTON!!!
