Virgin Broadband

Don't touch with a barge pole, you will constantly get disconneced, never ever get to the 8meg thingy speed they promise and if you ever get through to their "tech support" (how do you do sarcasm here) they will fook up your PC.

I'm sure TW's Virgin representative will be here before long to deal with your query... what a comprehensive service we provide!

Raven, there is a diffenrece between their cable broadband service (Virgin), and their normal broadband, which is dependent on your phoneline, like every provider if it's through your phoneline you'll get nothing like 8mb. Also this division is actually the olf NTL serice, I can vouch for the fact they are total and utter shit. if you can get full cable broadband however, that's a different storry, go with Virgin

I have sky and am always connected at around 6.7 mbps.

Wouldn't go so far as recommending them in case they were shite in your area but they're ok for me :)

I've got BT Yahoo. Never had a moments bother with it, but at £30.00 a month there's a price to never having a moments bother with it.

I have been with BT Broadband for years now, and no matter what anyone else says, I have always been happy with it.
Only thing I would criticize is the Indian call centre, but I have only had to contact them once in all the years I have been with them.

Had NTL and Virgin cable since 1998. Been solid all the way through. But here are lots around the country who are having a bad time with Virgin. I'm on 2mb and i get 1.9mb constantly.

Shhhhhhhhhh!!! By the sounds of it Raven, you're on virgin.net which is a different kettle of fish to the cable broadband I deal with.

I've got cable Virgin (ex Telewest I think) and had no worries so far. Wasn't as good at setting up as it used to be under Telewest though.

Proper normal broadband down a bt phoneline? (so with virgin on a BT line)

you'll probably have a 2mb to 8mb deal? BT maxDSL i think thats called - might be your "setup" inside your house is knackering up the speed their tests have sed your phoneline can take

swap your filters (plug one in every phone socket in the house even if its not used) , and if you've got any phone "extension cables" , take them off , they'll be the wrong ones, any sky box's modem cables , take off the phone as well at first just to see if its that ..

what you want is phone socket < filter < RJ11 cable of whatever lenth (where both ends are that clear plastic cube thingy) < modem < computer ..

ideally having a Modem Router would be best theyre more 'stable' with wack connections , and theyve got diagnosis and stats pages to tell how 'Noisy' your line is ..

if you have one of these already -and you know how to get to the stats - post that page here .. it might give away whats wrong it has things like Up Speed , Down Speed , Siginal To Noise Ratio , Upstream , Downstream dB , stuff like that on it ..

oh , and Have you ever had broadband with anyone else before?

I'm glad I dug this out. I knew that someone had posted something up about Virgin Broadband, I just couldn't remember if it was pro or anti.

I'm conducting a review at the moment of 'needless expenditure', for instance I'm hugely over-insured, and one area that I've flagged up is the £40.00 or so that BT help themselves to once a month. Broken down that's £30 for broadband + £10 for the phone (which rarely gets used for outgoing calls).

I've just received summat off of Virgin banging on about Fibre Optic Cable and giving me three broaband speed options.

The one which strikes me as being best for me is this 4Mb rising to 10Mb for £16 a month (£8 for the first three months) plus £11 a month for the phone. By my calculations that'll save me something in the region of £180 in the first year.

So, a thrifty move or a false economy? Advice please. :?

haven't experienced virgin bb, however, you can get broadband for around £15 very easily anywhere and a phone line at £11 meaqns you should be able to do the lot for £26. If you have even a low Sky package then you can get broadband for £0-£10 depending on speed. Some of the mobile phone providers offer a reasonable deal if you are a pay monthly customer - maybe worth checking

I'd say conduct a thorough review of whats out there 1st.

The packages for new customers are great. I've had Cable from NTL/Virgin for years with no problems. I would definitely go for that.

Also generally supportive of NTL cable bb

I did my own thorough review of expenditure last month, rang em up and dropped speed from 4 to 2 meg, and I'm now at 20 a month for BB and evening and weekend calls

Had an email recently and its going to either 8 or 10 meg imminently, FOC

Think (I'd have to check) I pay £17-99 pm with AOL Broadband off a land line. It isn't too bad and I can reduce it to £14-99 if I sign up for the next eighteen months.
