When this quake occurred, I was with about 50 other souls pooing their pants in the 23rd Floor Bar of the Hilton Hotel on Deansgate.

at 0100 in the morning, in a bar?? and you actually noticed something was happening in the outside world? mustn't have been quaffing enough....

Despite being woken 3 times in the night by a hungry baby I managed to sleep through the exciting event. Therefore proving that my maternal instinct is so finely tuned that I can sleep through an earthquake but not my daughter's cries.

Now knowing that she won't stir when the earth shakes I won't be creeping round shushing at everything whilst she's asleep during the night.

An earthquake doesn't wake you, but a feather falling near her pretty little head would have you bolt upright and seething with maternal protectiveness.

Think you're right too - best get 'em used to ambient noise - otherwise you'll wake her with your roars of delight when you;re downstairs watching us lift the Uefa Cup on May 14th!

It has amused me how this story has been reported in the news. Just after it occurred it was "tremours across England" and this evening (on Granada Reports at least) it was being referred to as the "great quake"

Over-reaction, much?

Whilst it freaked me out at the time, it sure made me thankful I don't live in an area that experiences much stronger earthquakes, and with that in mind I think calling it a "great quake" is a little OTT. But I suppose those people who's houses are now lacking a chimney may have a differing opinion.

Either way, it was very strange...
