Rule 11.11 (The Guardian looked it up, not me):FD wrote:Their keeper bundled into him and a Dutch player, they both ended up off the pitch.
Still offside though surely? He was OFF the pitch, regardless of why, he can't be playing anyone onside if he's on his arse behind the line can he?
"A defender who leaves the field during the course of play and does not immediately return must still be considered in determining where the second to last defender is for the purpose of judging which attackers are in an offside position," he says. "Such a defender is considered to be on the touch line or goal line closest to his or her off-field position. A defender who leaves the field with the referee's permission (and who thus requires the referee's permission to return) is not included in determining offside position."
Surely otherwise you'd just have keepers stepping off the field to play people offside?
Fair enough then!
Though there's a difference between being bundled off the field and being on your arse, and just walking off the field pointing and laughing.
But yeah, it makes sense I guess.
So unlike we all thought, it wasn't a terrible decision by a shite linesman but in fact a SUPERB decision by the best linesman in the lands? Or he got lucky

I guess the point is, if he'd have been just on the field and sat on his ass, he would have certainly played the man onside...FD wrote:Fair enough then!

Correct. Maybe the ref should've booked him for leaving the field of play without permissionTombwfc wrote:And, being as he wasn't given permission to be off the field, he could've ran back on at any time and blocked a shot off the line.

Aye, Deutschlands a given. The Netherlands just make me embarassed about the way English football is run.BWFC_Insane wrote:Same goes for the Germans.Lord Kangana wrote:That was a brilliant game of football.
I love watching the Dutch play when they are on song and all guns blazing. We could learn so much if only we wanted to....
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Yep the same said country who's league is so crappy when a striker scores 50 goals in a season we should not bat an eyelid never mind bid for him!!!Lord Kangana wrote:Aye, Deutschlands a given. That would be the same players who consistently play all over Europe at the biggest clubs, who play for a country about 1/6th that of England, yet have a far better record than we do?hoboh2o wrote:Yep the same said country who's league is so crappy when a striker scores 50 goals in a season we should not bat an eyelid never mind bid for him!!!Lord Kangana wrote:Aye, Deutschlands a given. The one who had those time-wasters, Van Basten, Cruyff, Begkamp, Kluivert, Gullit etc etc? That the one?Lord Kangana wrote:That would be the same players who consistently play all over Europe at the biggest clubs, who play for a country about 1/6th that of England, yet have a far better record than we do?hoboh2o wrote:Yep the same said country who's league is so crappy when a striker scores 50 goals in a season we should not bat an eyelid never mind bid for him!!!Lord Kangana wrote:Aye, Deutschlands a given. Common sense should apply.Tombwfc wrote: Rule 11.11 (The Guardian looked it up, not me):

What exactly are the other Italian defenders expected to do in this situation ? Or say a defending player tried to slide tackle an opponent but missed and ended up hitting the advertising boards and the game continued...
If Panucci is classed as playing RVN onside then the other 3 defenders would have to drop back to the goal line because they cannot play RVN offside in this situation.
The only exception for offside would be if Buffon came out of the goal and stood beyond RVN making him offside. However, this would expose the goal and leave it unprotected from a shot.

You know that as soon as Panucci went down the linesman was praying for something like this to happen so he could get himself in the papers for making the RIGHT decision.

Makes sense to me, Tango. Officials are usually in the public eye for making dubious calls - surely they would welcome an opportunity to make a highly controversial call and be shown to be correct.TANGODANCER wrote:?H.
