It would be nice for everyone if the Canada bit continued and the rest was just left to die quietly away. Very nice actually.

Well, I would like to hear more about Pencilbiter's actual plans and I don't think there is much danger of nuclear attack at the moment. While Canada is a very big country, it is quite likely they would miss any centre of population. In a tournament on the longest drive hole I once missed Bermuda, so it's possible to miss a country. In the same tournament to make up for that on two other occasions I hit Bermuda instead of the ball.

Er, that wouldn't be Royal St George's Golf Club, Bermuda, by any chance Monty?

Yes, it was (though I'm not sure it had the name Royal in it). I was staying at a time-sharing condo beside the course. The longest drive competition was on the 18th. Elevated tee and long hole. I crushed it about 150 yards straight into a very strong wind, at which point it suddenly and mysteriously made a right turn and, still rising, cleared some large concrete structure for collecting rain water beside the course, came down over a small coastal road with a house or two, ultimately finding rest in the North Atlantic. It must have gone at least 200 yards sideways. Windy place, Bermuda.

I've played there twice (twenty odd years ago) as my ex-boss owned one of those condos. There's one big dogleg that goes around a cove and, for fun, you're allowed a go at driving across the cove with one ball without it affecting your score. It's 308 yds carry and I once had a certificate for driving it twice in a week. Trouble is, when you hit the green it's all downhill away from you. That's why you don't try it in a score round. My ball on one of them finished about two hundred yards through the green. It would have needed a wood shot just to get back. Happy memories of that place.

Great course and one of my abiding memories is getting caught in a hailstorm where the hail was as big as the golf balls. Not what you'd imagine in Bermuda.

Did you just pick the nearest white blob to the hole and putt that then Tango?

It must have been the early 90s when I played there. I remember the dogleg and failing to carry the water  . On a sad note, they are closing it for good in August to make way for a development based on the old Club Med property.

Lord, how old must that place be? It had been empty for ages when we went. I have a photograph somewhere of the sign, think there was some sort of old gun there too.
