Michael Vaughan is to step down as England Test captain and will be replaced by Kevin Pietersen, Sky Sports understands.

The 33-year-old Yorkshire batsman led England to a first series defeat at home to South Africa since 1965 and struggled for runs throughout the series.

Vaughan scored just 40 runs in three Tests against the Proteas.

He has been captain for five years and led England to victory in the Ashes three years ago, but has captained the side to three series defeats against top-class opposition since returning from a career-threatening knee injury.

Candidates to succeed him include Andrew Strauss, Paul Collingwood and Kent skipper Robert Key, but Sky Sports understands that Hampshire batsman Kevin Pietersen will be handed the captaincy for the fourth Test at the Oval.

Pietersen captained the one-day side against New Zealand earlier this summer after regular one-day skipper Collingwood was suspended.

The ECB is to hold a press conference at 1pm in Loughborough.

Personally I think Pieterson is the wrong choice for captain, maybe for 20Twenty matches but he's far too selfish a player to captain a test cricket side. Collingwood for me should get that job.

Colly has stepped down aswell, so it won't be him. And he's lucky to still be in the test squad, nevermind becoming captain of it.

Pietersen is a risky but brave choice. It might just be the making of him as it has been for people like Ricky Ponting.

Didn't know he'd stepped down. I think he should be in the squad, definitely, but it's personal opinion.

Never affected Atherton's average, or Stewarts for that matter.

Vaughan's a bloody good Captain, but a shxt batsman; shame really.

His average is still over 40. It's just he's completely lost his batting of late, so you couldn't really pick him for the team.

I'm hoping that they don't go with Pietersen, just don't think he'd cut the mustard as the captain

Key should be a regular with the talent he has. Says something about him that he's not.

Can't see past either Cook or Pietersen. Seeing as KP isn't strictly English I doubt the pressure will get to him and affect his batting negatively. So go for him.

Why's Key not been in that squad's what I'd like to know? We're despearate for a bat-all-day anchor. I think it might be a bit much to just turn round to him and say "You're back in, oh, and what's more you're captain to boot" though.
