Harry Potter ranks 471, but The Wicker Man ranks 485. Deer Hunter (467) and Full Metal Jacket (457), yet Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom (233)

See what I mean! People who think Harry Potter is a good film, will undoubtedly never have seen some of the better films made, yet vote for Harry Potter as a cinematic great. Indiana Jones is a good film but as good as the other 2?

Indiana Jones films are classics and brilliant films for what they are.

But how can you judge them alongside films in different genres that perhaps are more significant in other ways?

You can't unless you accept that the vote is based on the films that are most popular amongst the general public.

Otherwise we could just have a panel of Jonathan Woss, Germaine Greer and Jo Whiney telling us "what we should regard as the best films".

I agree with you in a round-about kind of way, but I just never think once the public get involved you can take much credence by it.

I don't want someone to tell me what is or isn't a good film, I'll make my own mind up.

A classic in one persons eyes may be absolutely shi.te in anothers.

Like music, its personal and some films appeal to more people than others. I like some films that the critics "panned". So what? Doesn't make them good or bad, just means I like them.

For example, Schindlers list is a great film (IMO) and it is a very important film in terms of defining some horific historical events.

However, if I sit down on a Saturday evening, its not something I'd particularly choose to watch. But I might re-vist star wars or indiana jones. Therefore if someone asked me for my top 10 films or whatever, I probably wouldn't select Schindlers list. Even though I think its a great film.
