Cheers for the advice, folks, loaded myself up with a nice little 60 gigger yesterday evening, along with PGR4 and Tiger Woods for about £185 or so, which I thought was most reasonable. Shall enjoy getting to grips with it again and bulking out my game collection... fortunately I know a man (if you know what I mean
)

i have, both, and believe PES to be more like football than FIFA will ever beboltonbhoy1978 wrote:Batman wrote:pes demo out on 2nd october

FD wrote:Don't fall into the Elite being better trap, they are just as noisy and just as prone to dying. Like all 360's, some of them are good and make little noise, some are not. It's down the to the drive and not the motherboard (which is what changed with the elite etc). Some of the older hitachi drives are like aircraft taking off, whereas the newer revised hitachi and the benq drives are pretty quiet, certainly compared with the older ones. It's pot luck as to which you get though, no guarantee of which drive you'll get by which "sku" you buy.
Also, don't fall into getting an arcade. They are cheap for a reason, they are barebones units and don't even come with a unit to save games onto. Games require a lot of updating nowadays, so a Hard Drive is the preferable option. They are fine for literally playing games though, but if you plan to use XBOX LIVE then you'll eventually want to download a live arcade game (like Duke3D or Geometry Wars) or a demo or even some DLC, and then you'd have to go out and buy a hard drive, which will cost you more to buy on its own than within a premium unit.
I'd reccommend the Premium model, comes with wireless controller, hard drive and cables that will get you the HD signal to the tv.
Elites are better than the premium models ... Xbox stated this when they launched it saying that they had fixed alot of problems. In 2 years i ended up having 5 premium consoles die on me with the red light treatment, since i got an elite ive not had one problem. As for the HD, 60 is plenty even for harcore gamers. Ive got an elite with 100gig and have never come close to filling it and im an xbox live slag who is always downloading stuff.
Xbox stated it? Of course they did mate, they are trying to sell the new SKU! There is very little difference between the two when you actually look inside the machines.ChrisC wrote:Elites are better than the premium models ... Red ring on the 360 is down to luck, not the model you own.

theyre exactly the same now. th'only difference is the colour and the hdd... the motherboards are now the same..
they'll only 'mend' it when the graphix chip and cpu are 'merged' on upcoming models.
if that works.

the new dashboard with the avatars, apparantly lets you copy the games to the hdd, so once the dvd drive 'winds down' after checking the disc is in - then theoretially that should make 'em quieter too.FD wrote:The DVD drive is different on the newer models too, but it's still pot luck, you could get a noisy (older) one of a quieter (newer) model.
That makes very little difference to red ringing anyway.
hdd might fill up quick tho..
knowing whats happened already, knowing msft 's luck...
the dvd spinning round probably cools the console, not having the dvd in will probably "melt/break" them faster... :/
Very true a1, the new dashboard does let you install games, but I find it a little bit pointless myself as to play the installed game you still need to have the original disc in the drive! It will of course make the dvd-drive have a longer life (and I've personally had a drive die on me, had to replace the laser etc) but there is no way on earth I'm paying the disgusting prices Microsoft demand for a bigger HDD, and as it is, my HDD would only fit 1 game on it at present.
Don't like the look of the new dash either, looks too much like a PS3 cross-media-bar only with avatars and childish, generic, non-gamer friendly images.

Well i have a friend who has worked at "Game" for just over a yeah now and he has said since his time there the store has only ever had to take back around 4 elites where as with the premium they took over 200!FD wrote:Xbox stated it? So IMO luck isnt playing to much of a part. Not saying you are wrong FD just saying i listen to facts more than anything.
Fair enough mate, but your friend works in ONE store. The figures don't lie and there isn't a reduction in RROD since the elite came outChrisC wrote:Well i have a friend who has worked at "Game" for just over a yeah now and he has said since his time there the store has only ever had to take back around 4 elites where as with the premium they took over 200!

There are other factors though;
How many elites do they sell?
Does it make up most of their 360 console sales etc?
The premium and core models have been out 2-3 years longer than the elite!
