Ever been patronised by an idiot?

Post by Prufrock » Mon Oct 20, 2008 1:28 am

This post has been prompted by the single most frustrating conversation of my life. In the hostel im staying at at the moment, i was down stairs surfing t'net like. Its getting late over here, so there is just an australian girl and an american guy. The american guy is from the deep south but seems like a normal enough guy, so up comes the standard, slightly awkward discussion with a seemingly fairly liberal, at least vaguely open minded southern american. The australian girl isnt clever, and neither is he , yet im guessing they have been brought up in a liberal environment since they both have a conversation from the perspective of say LK (used as a socialsit example), but when he was only three years old. Id had to listen to arguments about how animals were as intelligent as us, how climate change is DEFINATELY our fault and SOLELY our fault, how the only way to stop this climate change is to and i fecking quote 'take the stairs, not the lift'.

HOWEVER, as a leftie myself, whilst the sweeping uneducated opinions stated above wind me up as being the ones who get us a reputation for hippyish nonsense, i manged to bite my tongue. I HAD to crack however, when captain southern america started to tell miss australia how 9/11 was a conspiracy. Cue the worst concealed cough of 'bollox' you have ever heard. I was then informed of how 11 of the hijackers of 9/11, by which he meant the people genuinely on the planes, were still alive and that the US goverment staged it all. To which i suggested 'so it was the biggest photoshop ever?' to which i got the respnse yes.

Thinly disguised in this rant is the point that throughout our 'heated' conversation, i kept being bombarded with phrases such as 'what you should remember is...' 'i think you'll find...' Have you ever been patronised by an opinion which is so clearly wrong, yet almost the fact the fool dispensing this crap is so smugly sure they are right about their ludicrous opinion, that your average persons view that each should be entitled to their own opinion seems insignificent compared to your pure frustration?

Wheres your proof he was wrong about anything he said?

Cant remember who said it but, 'if dolphins are as intelligent as humans why are we up here driving and surfing the internet and they are swiming about chasing fish' or words to that effect. The climate change one i will give him, i just didnt like the smug way it was presented as stone wall unquestionable fact, YET when he talked about 9/11 (which whilst i beleive in man made climate change, is far more of a certainty to say factually happened and wasnt a conspiracy) he was one hundred per cent convinced and wouldnt hear questions. Also the idea of saving the world by taking the stairs and the way such bulshiiite advice is dispensed by people as genuinly mattering annoys me. Its akin to trying to put out the great fire of london by spitting on it. Now theres nothing wrong with doing these little things, and no doubt if all of london had gathered to spit on it, the great fire might have been slightly reduced, but all this 'little things' stuff means all the focus is taken off the thing that might actually make a difference, putting pressure on big business and industry to cut down their emisissions.

The 9/11 conspiracy stuff, like the Diana stuff, and the man on the moon stuff is laughable, it REALLY is.

My actual point is not what he said though, he is entitled to all those opinions, i aksed the question of have you ever been in a situation like mine, where the person you disagree with is sooo sure of their opinions, that they start introducing phrases such as, 'you need to remember' , 'thats what they want you to think', 'you've fallen into their trap'. This happened last night and i seriously questioned whether equality, democracy, and freedom of speech were good things!

Anyone else been in similar situations?

Ha, I'd take the dolphins' way of life any day!

Anyway, when you say 'miss australia'... was she a fittie? :D

Aye, though I'm not convinced surfing the internet or driving a car (particularly the morons I encounter every morning) is a sign of intelligence

"have I ever been patronised by an idiot ?"

why, yes my friend, of course, but don't worry about it.

sorry, couldn't help it.

you say "... they are entitled to their opinions" ... in fact, I'm not sure they are. When an opinion is so ill informed & potentially destructive WHY are they entitled to it ?

it's an offence to hold (& spout) racist opinions, it's a jailable offence in Europe to deny the holocaust, so why is it acceptable to spread such shite ?

democracy eh !?!?

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I run a pub, and can honestly say I get patronized by idiots on a weekly basis. I've been patronized by idiotic Englishmen, Americans, Canadians, Kiwis, Aussies (too many to count), French, Fins, Germans, Singaporeans, Thais, etc etc etc.

Consider yourself lucky, and enjoy the absurdness of it all. It keeps life from getting boring.

Most people who patronize one are being at best stupid and usually idiotic.

Dont you mean patronise?

This thread seems to have turned into a race for everyone to say something patronising. Whoever is last should be taken to one side and have the meaning of 'to patronise' explained to them in simplistic terms.

Essentially, you disagree with someone and that p*sses you off that they hold that opinion? Or have I missed the point?

Yes. Ill explain it in simple terms for you, because you just havent got it ;)

On a serious note it's not that i disagree, my question is aimed towards that sort of occasion where you disagree with someone and they disagree with you , and you are having a reasoned debate, you put forward informed points, and expect tother person to either come back with their own points, but instead you get patronising drivel and a look down their nose at you.

I cant get to that youtube link on t'other thread, but if it says that the US motives for invading Iraq might not be what they said they were then i would be agreeing. If it suggests 9/11, actually feck it, 11 bloody/9, was a conspiracy from inside the US administration then that IMO is bollox. Someone can think that it is, but they are going to have to have some reasons and some evidence instead of looking down their nose at em as if its patently obvious it was a conspiracy.

No, I didn't mean patronise. I use the Oxford English Dictionary spelling, and I tend to put an apostrophe in don't as well. As for the meaning - there are in fact many - such as patronizing your favourite restaurant. However, from the context, I took you to mean one of the more pejorative definitions, sic:
Patronize
...
6. a. trans. To assume an air of superiority towards; to treat or speak about (a person, etc.) condescendingly, esp. with apparent indulgence or kindness.

b. intr. To assume or adopt an air of superiority; to act or speak condescendingly.
My apologies if you find this response patronizing.

Maybe Dolphins were the pre-eminent species at one time, achieved true spiritual contentment and just decided there was nothing left to do on land, so went off to reside in the sea...
