I think I'd accept that as a 'plot' more than an attempt. For me, an attempt should include the act of attempting, so until I hear a big boom I'm still waiting for number one. I'm unaware of the OED's stance on this definition though.Worthy4England wrote:I thought they arrested two blokes last week for attempt number one?communistworkethic wrote:anyone running a sweep on when the first assassination attempt is?

Yeah - well given their history race has to be the biggest talking point of this election, and what differentiates it from previous elections.mummywhycantieatcrayons wrote:
Well, at least we can put the "it's not about race" nonsense to bed now..... this kind of thing has been non-stop since he actually won.
I watched the BBC coverage on Tuesday morning, and Dimbleby was continually pulling the conversation back to race. I think most commentators agree that this is a huge racial step forward (or confirmation of progress), and that it adds significantly to Obama's achievement that he has crossed this "barrier" now which is earlier (by decades) than almost anybody expected. In reality the political conditions were such that any Democrat should have been a "shoe in" but his campaign could have faltered had he and his team not played down the subject of race at every opportunity.
Whilst the positive effect on America's black population may be everlasting, the rest of us need to hope that his leadership skills match is eloquence.

Is what I was gonna post. His skin colour seems a convienient excuse to deflect the issue away from the American public's dissatisfaction with "Reagonomics" and sabre-rattling that McCain seemed happy to perpetuate.

Its the usual "right wingers" repsonse when a good "liberal" candidate wins because of the publics dissatisfaction with the previous right wing regimes it always goes along the lines of...Lord Kangana wrote:Is what I was gonna post. "Well they're a good candidate and they're making good promises but will they deliver?"
My response would be "Better than your shite candidate with poor promises failing to deliver though!!!"

Thank God in a couple of days the US erections errrr elections will be done dusted and placed in the file marked "Done lets move on".
I live in the UK and all that bothers me is, when the feck are Brownose and his stoodges going? not wether the US voters elect a black, blue, yellow, red or alien President.
The US if it were a Gigolo would be the most expensive, impotent limp d*ck ever!! that always flattered to decieve.

I don't belief the presidential veto can get legislation that the President want to pass through a filibustering Senate. Rather it can block legislation that Congress passes but the President does not like.communistworkethic wrote:presidential veto?H. They'll still need to bring a few Republicans on their side to pass any controversial legislation.

The sad irony is that the increased turn-out of black voters probably led to the ban on gay marriage. Something like 69% of black voters voted to ban it. Quite a disgusting phenomenon but there you have it.I find it quite amusing that on the same day this fella's voted in with a "liberal" agenda, the supposedly "liberal" California goes and bans gay marriage.
If anything the down turn helped Labour win in Glenrothes.ratbert wrote:Interesting by-election result in Glenrothes today - the incumbent party not being punished during an economic downturn. Looks like the electorate don't like oppositions taking victory for granted, as the SNP did...

Thought I'd give this one a bit of a bump around the story of Damian Green. I'm not trying to be political about this, because I'm not looking to discuss the person particularly or the circumstances of his arrest. The way I see it - as depoliticized as I can make it.
Home Office mandarins think they're being subjected to leaks - serious enough to ask the police to investigate.
Police determine that some fairly junior HO person is responsible and should be arrested - this implicates someone who happens to be an MP.
Police think they should search said MPs home and his office (which happens to be in the House)
All sides, MP's appear to be up in arms about this disgraceful invasion of an MPs private office. I'm just trying to work out why they should be so indignant - the police are subject to the same laws as everyone else who has to sign the Official Secrets Act. Just sounds to me like one law for one...

Need to read up on the full ins and outs of it. The first thing that springs to mind is there's leaks all the fooking time (some deliberate) so why is this one different? BBC were saying some obscure law was used to arrest this MP? Infact the BBC states "It is unprecedented for an MP to be arrested and his office searched by police in connection with a leak inquiry".
