It has things to say as a film and addresses a few issues brilliantly. Can racism be funny? This film thinks so and handles it all so well, making fun of bigotry in the bargain. It's like Victor Meldrew, armed and dangerous. Loved it.General Mannerheim wrote:Yeah i saw it without hearing anything about it, i had a couple of hours to kill and that was on at the time.TANGODANCER wrote:General, you are so right. previews very, very promising. based on novels by david Peace (He of THE DAMNED UNITED fame).
Saw one piece claiming it'll walk away with Next year's baftas, and that before even the first episode screened.
The teaser trailer on youtube (all thirty seconds of it) makes it look grim up north alright. Could be the best thing of the year. Also has Paddy Consadine in it, who is a teriffic actor.

Recommend Verb's review to all, and this series also...
I disagree at heart, though... not with your review, but, somehow, i didn't suspend disbelief... i didn't believe the conspiracy, the silence, the impunity...
I'm disappointed, in one sense... but this is excellent drama... wish i could buy into it more... a bit of me feels it's copying american drama, but our place doesn't work for that, it really doesn't... but i'm holding off until the next two are up...

I must say that, on the other forum I use, the reviews have tended to side between the 'absolutely amazing' to the 'great, but in the main underwhelming' brackets. There was a good review in the New Statesman which suggested that, as you have the spectre of the murders in the background, whether you needed the added weight of the corruption, brutality, suicide, the institutionalisation, and whether it would overpower the viewer. As yours, WTW, very good points.
But hey, I bought into it

And what the heck, the first two hours of The Wire were pretty humdrum, and Paddy Constadine is in the next one, can't be too bad

The first two hours of The Wire were utterly compelling... And the reason I kept going for the next however many hours it was... Red Riding is not, i'm afraid, ever going to match that...Verbal wrote:Thanks, wtwWilliam the White wrote:Tremendous review, really intelligent and perceptive, Verbal.Verbal wrote:whssuperjohnmcginlay wrote:There's 2 to come.General Mannerheim wrote: so far? how many has there been, i only have one taped???

But hey, I bought into itit was refreshing to see such an ending, if unexpected. Also, the fact that it blurs between fact and fiction makes it a bit hard work at times to say the least...but there were moments watching the film, mostly the scenes containing Sean Harris, where I was completely mesmerised.

I found the first two hours quite dull, mostly because it took me time to get used to the slow pacing of the show, after that I thought it was fantastic. And I'll take your word on the SorpanosWilliam the White wrote:The first two hours of The Wire were utterly compelling... And the reason I kept going for the next however many hours it was... Hopping off the television train for a moment. I watched a DVD of The Scarlet and The Black last evening. Not a bad cast - it included Gregory Peck, Christopher Plummer and John Geilgud - and tells a story of a priest in Rome during the Nazi occupation. There are no Oscar winning performances but it's an interesting film and one that highlights the danger to and the morals and indecision of the main characters. This is not a 'blood and guts' war movie, nor does it intend to be (unless the director got it wrong) but it's good enough to portray the mood of the times as well as the delicate (and sometimes not so delicate) manoeuvring undertaken by the characters.
To summarise: A good, but not great, film that forces one into analysis rather than tells you what is right and what is wrong - although there is distinct goody/baddy element. I suspect that it could have been done better, but I'm not sure as to how; a tighter script perhaps, a different character for the priest (Peck, to me at least, doesn't quite fit and, as the main character, that takes something away from the film).
Not a bad two hours spent and I've put it into my pile of 'watch again' DVDs.
