Jade Goody dies.
Story here.
I know she wasn't everyone's cup of tea and she probably was a walking example of everything that's wrong with television and the celebrity culture we live in nowadays but someone so young with two small kids dying of cancer is absolutely tragic.

If I should die, think only this of me:
That there's some corner of a foreign field
That is for ever England

I am one of those people who hated what she represented, and who couldn't believe everyone suddenly forgave her horrid racist remarks because she got cancer.CrazyHorse wrote:Story here.

Today however, is not the day for talking about that, or bringing up the horrific OK! tribute edition, published before her death. Nobody deserves cancer, and whilst I don't see how her death is front page news, my heart honetly does go out to two young children who have lost their mother at such a young age, and a familly that has lost it's daughter. Sad sad news for them, and I hope, though I am not confident, the trash media will give the familly time and space to grieve in peace.

Every last word of what Prufrock said. Although there's already a distinctly uncomfortable feeling, comparable to the aftermath of Diana, about the reporting of her death, so your last sentence is already veering to the "not confident".Prufrock wrote:I am one of those people who hated what she represented, and who couldn't believe everyone suddenly forgave her horrid racist remarks because she got cancer.CrazyHorse wrote:Story here.

I totally agree. I didn't expect to care, but i was actually quite saddened when i found out this morning.Prufrock wrote:I am one of those people who hated what she represented, and who couldn't believe everyone suddenly forgave her horrid racist remarks because she got cancer.CrazyHorse wrote:Story here.

However, I will say (in defence of the trash media) that Goody and here family have, arguably for good reason, milked every last penny out of this tragic story, and so it's a bit rich (IMO) to come out and say that they want to grieve in private. Jade and her people created this media circus and the Truman Show-like life.

Couldn't agree more Tom. The media are "whores" but if you let the wolf through the door, you don't get to politely ask it to leave at a later date.Tombwfc wrote:However, I will say (in defence of the trash media) that Goody and here family have, arguably for good reason, milked every last penny out of this tragic story, and so it's a bit rich (IMO) to come out and say that they want to grieve in private. My only problem with this is it was Goody herself who made the decision, not the familly. I also don't agree that it gives the media the right to camp in their hundreds outside the house of a grieving familly, no matter what. My sympathy has always been with, and stays with, the familly, more than necessarily Goody herself. All that said nobody deserves cancer, and everyone deserves the right to a dignified death,no matter how dignified or not their life was.FD wrote:Couldn't agree more Tom. So her family were nothing to do with the media circus surrounding her illness? Not one of them decided to "have a word" with her? Of course she made the decision, but were her families photo's blurred out etc? For God sake, her children's photos were in the paper! I've no doubt she at least consulted her family about her decision.
I don't (and didn't) want to see her on the front page EVERY day with this, but it happened. Like it or not, as I said, the wolf was at the door and they let it in, that's life, it sucks.
This isn't the time or place really though, my dad died of cancer and this sort of thing (when it's a celebrity) has always made me feel bitter. I'm sad she died because cancer is pure evil, there is no dignified way to die of it, it's draws the life from you slowly until you are just not there anymore. I'm sorry for her family and I know exactly how it feels, so perhaps I'll keep my council on the subject for now.

Bollocks. If the Goody family enjoyed the fruits of their daughter's incomprehensible celebrity, afforded them by shitbag plebs that are prepared to pay good money for certain dreadful publications, then how can they moan about the very same upon her death?
May the bridges I burn light your way

Tonight's Super League Game between Celtic and Wakefield was called off at the last minute due to the sudden death of reserve teamer Leon Walker in tonight's reserve game. He was 21 years old and looking forward to a good life in the sport. For his life to be snatched away seemingly in his prime is devastating for all involved, and even more so considering he is the second Wakefield player after Adam Watene to pass away in the last 6 months. This is just as news worthy as the Jade Goody 'story' however I feel it won't receive anywhere near as much publicity.
A sad day for Rugby League.

I wouldn't know Goody if I tripped over her in my broom cupboard but, really, all the sanctimonious bullshit banging around the place makes my skin crawl. As far as I know she wasn't a serial killer of children (or even fluffy white seal cubs) and I can be pretty certain that she didn't trawl the streets murdering prostitutes. I couldn't be arsed to find out why she was 'famous' but I gather it was via some television contest or other - so what? Perhaps she made a few quid out of her notoriety and, heaven forbid, milked it for what it was worth? Good luck to her; if stupid people with glazed eyes and a penchant for purchasing gossip magazines wish to contribute to the upkeep of someone who takes advantage of their own failings then who is to blame?

An interesting perspective Dujon. I think the issue is, not that she particularly did anything like eat the heads of small babies. She was "famous" for generally being a complete dimwit on the type of reality TV shows, that many just switch off (just as many don't, but there's not a lot of middle ground). Upon the news of this person having terminal cancer (for which, I'm dreadfully sorry), one couldn't move for programmes of her getting chemo, TV bulletins, news bulletins without hearing about it. I am genuinely sorry for her family, like many, I have personal experiences of cancer, but I think the "milked it for what it was worth" has probably switched a significant proportion of the nation completely off, to the fact she was going to die. You'd probably have needed to be in the UK, to pass a proper judgement for yourself and to understand just how unavoidably "in your face" it's been.
It's now, at least over here, the day after she died. I have to say I still stand by my comments regarding the familly. People quote the fact the took the benefits of being in the public eye, but i was disgusted with the press invasion when Diana died, and I think it's wrong here too. When a familly loses a familly member, there is NO justification to camping outside their house night and day. I'm sorry but two kids have lost their mother, are you telling me those kids were complicit in the media whoring of her story? That is where my sympathy lies.
As for Goody herself, I have the basic level of sympathy as when anyone dies, but I am so so dissapointed with the British press right now. Right from word go when the fact she had cancer exonerated her from being a narrow minded bullying racist bigot, to the day her death became front page news on EVERY SINGLE mainstream british newspaper. Natasha Richardson, an actress and AIDS awareness lobbyist died last week and got minimal news coverage compared to this. The amount of news coverage this has got feels almost satirical. I cannot believe Stephen Fry, a man for who i have so much repect described her as 'a kind of princess D from the wrong side of the tracks'. The only similarity between the two is that they were both manipulative bitches. I feel bad that anyone gets cancer but i echo wholeheartedly Jimbo's comments. So many people of cancer die every day, people who are far more rounded, who contribute far more to society, and who would be far better rolemodels than Jade Goody. All that said, the only thing that outstrips my disust for everything she stands for, is sympathy for those kids. Whatever yuo say about how she whored herself out, somebody justify to me, two young kids who have lost their mother and can't possibly comprehend why, having literally hundreds of journalists camped outside their house taking pictures and interviewing strangers...please, somebody justify that?
