Have to admit that was one of the worst jobs done by a referee I have ever seen. Simply incompetent from start to finish. Having said that, if I was reffing the game, Drogba wouldn't have gotten injured because I probably would have red carded him before that point. He is constantly diving and play acting then seems confused when he doesn't get a call for an actual foul. What a complete utter prat.

Another referee who wants to make himself the star of the show. Yes, Chelsea got hosed but the Abidal sending off was total nonsense, Anelka tripped over his own feet. As I said in the Fletcher thread, the sooner we can replace these power-mad wannabe-footballers-who-didn't-have-the-talent with a chip in the ball and a video monitor, the better.

Yeah, while we're at it, lets replace Bolton's players who can't hit a pass more than 10 yards (who I think you mention occasionally) with FIFA 09 players too. In fact instead of watching a live game, where human error could possibly play a part - let's just play FIFA instead. No chanting about inbred Wiganers on there and we could probably get the code changed so all players were equal too, which might mean a lot of 0-0 draws, but so be it.H. Also, a quite superb(!) bit of ignorance (and borderline racism) on 5 live after the game by Paddy Crerand:
Yes, cos the Italian who sent off Fletcher was superb, and everyone knows our referees are revered throughout the land...
"Why are we getting referees from little countries like Norway and Sweden?"

Only mistake he made was that he should have sent Ronaldo off, as well.

Indeed, the idea that everything would be rosy, and no decision would ever be questioned if there was video technology is just not true, as proved by Cricket. Blatant fouls it could help with, but the vast majority of penalty appeals are hugely subjective. For all the disruptions it would cause to the game, it just wouldn't be worth it IMO.Worthy4England wrote:Yeah, while we're at it, lets replace Bolton's players who can't hit a pass more than 10 yards (who I think you mention occasionally) with FIFA 09 players too. Talking about video technology in this instance is a red herring anyway, you don't need video evidence to give at least three of those penalty decisions, they are blatant and the referee can see all of them clearly. It's the fact that someone so clearly incompetant was given such a massive game that is the problem.
And in any case, I got a fecking shocker of a penalty decision on Pro Evo the other day.

I stated earlier I wanted Chelsea to win, in my defence, I didn't think it would be this funny if they lost. I'm still smiling. They were so much better than Barca, and should have had three definate penalties, and possibly one more, the Pique one being the biggest bottled decision I've seen for a while. Said to my mate whilst watching, as soon as Abidal went off, that Barca would win. You knew the ref just wasn't going to give Chelsea a single decision after that.Verbal wrote:watched this in a pub in west london.
Beautiful.
A Barca winner with the last kick of the game seemed like it would be the perfect ending after 93 mins, until Chelsea still had time to have another stonewall penalty turned down, right it front of the ref, and Ballack nearly have a stroke. Cap Terry and Lampard almost in tears and that little Chelsea kid crying his eyes out....ah perfection. Next time a religion thread pops up, TD might want to bear this in mind as evidence. All made sweeter by the fact Lampard put in one of the best midfield displays I've ever seen, and then lost. With a fat lip. Glorious. Glorious glorious glorious.

getting the tube back home, stopped at the station next to Stamford Bridge...never seen so many depressed people in such a confined space (the Reebok being the previous holder of that title). Me and my mate at work have been basically just laughing all morning about it.

It was wonderous. Watched it in a packed pub and had never realised just how unpopular Chelsea are globally. Thought what with Drogba, Malouda and Anelka there might be one or two at least cheering Chelsea, but when Iniesta scored the whole place irrupted with cheers and laughter. Afterwards me and my mate went to meet the girls and they kept asking all night why we were sat there with massive grins on our faces. If anyone ever needs to explain shadenfreude to someone, this is the perfect illustration. So much of it was perfect. The penalites, the lateness, Drogba, Terry, Lampard, against ten men, and an awful ref, Ballack looking like he was going to lose it, and my favourite as yet untouched upon moment, Guardiola's Mourinho-esque run down the touchline. Special.Verbal wrote:Prufrock wrote:I stated earlier I wanted Chelsea to win, in my defence, I didn't think it would be this funny if they lost. I'm still smiling. Not the same really, because most of the prawn-sandwich brigade don't actually care.Worthy4England wrote:Surely it's no different when United lose? Plus the bastards never actually lose. Can't see Barca getting that lucky again, against a better side. Ferguson will bring out his players for big games, stifle Barca, and then flatten a piss-poor defence. They really are wank at the back. Says it all that Piqué United's fifth choice centre back, is their second/third.Verbal wrote:Not the same really, because most of the prawn-sandwich brigade don't actually care.Worthy4England wrote:Surely it's no different when United lose? Of what, that miracles happen? There was a far better example in the game: Drogba dived onto the floor in extreme agony, shuddered and died. The Chelsea medic dashed on, sprinkled him with holy water and he leapt back to his feet cured, rivalling anything that Lourdes has ever produced.Prufrock wrote: Next time a religion thread pops up, TD might want to bear this in mind as evidence. Si Deus pro nobis, quis contra nos?
Indeed, the whole night was divine. Another topic of convo in the pub was, what the feck does the trainer say and do when he runs on. Everyone knows there is nothing wrong with Drogba, but they have to at least pretend!TANGODANCER wrote:Of what, that miracles happen? It was a shocking shocking shocking 'refereeing' performance, and whilst not justifying it I can at least understand Drogba and Ballack's reactions, but DEATH THREATS, jesus wept, there are some feckwit mentalists around.Verbal wrote:the ref has been smuggled out of the country apparently after receiving death threats.
