Wimbledon 2009

I hope Murray gets through. Obviously because I want him to do well and beat Roddick which I think he will, but hopefully to quell this ridiculous hype next year. To be honest, one of the best things about a Brit winning Wimbledon would be an end to the mentalness of the Brit hype in a Wimbledon fortnight. It's like people forget that the Tennis season goes on to November.

Forget? I doubt most knew in the first place. I certainly didnt. I get to be blissfully unaware of its existence after this 2 weeks of nonesense.Verbal wrote:I hope Murray gets through. Heathen
though I'm just sick of how everyone here seems to think if Brits don't excel at Wimbledon then we're automatically crap. I mean, take Keothavong, who became a top 50 player this year - the first time we've had one in ages. She loses first round at Wimbledon and is asked whether she feels she has 'let the country down'? F*ck off.

We are quite crap though. I don't mind tennis but find that where people come from has no bearing on whether I like them or not, hence I'm indifferent towards the miserable one.Verbal wrote:Heathenthough I'm just sick of how everyone here seems to think if Brits don't excel at Wimbledon then we're automatically crap. This is a good point, hopefully once someone finally wins they'll stop going on about it. Just think, a little pain and it will be over. Take the hit.
Hhaha And Tommy Haas. Was it Virtua Tennis? Awesome game.

Alas, only Tango remembers Stockport's own Fred Perry now - the last Englishman to win Wimbledon. It's been over thirty years since Virginia Wade won. So i hope Andy wins and we can forget angst for a while.Verbal wrote:I hope Murray gets through. Had a bad feeling about this one after watching Roddick beat Hewett. Murray looked to be struggling and had too many bad first serves. He did well to get as far as this but he's got a bit to go yet. Still our best prospect for a long time and he fought back but was always playing uphill. Roddick deserved the win and played really well. Still Federer to lift the trophy for me.
Si Deus pro nobis, quis contra nos?
Agreed TD, think it was BWFCi who said Roddick looks like a man on a mission, and I think today proved that. Still have to fancy Fed to add another cow to his herd. Shame for Murray, just didn't happen for him today. He had chances, but Roddick's tie break record is phenomenal. Roddick was hungry, and Murray looked nervous.

Great final. Shame for Roddick but at least Federer had to work to win the 15th.
Still I miss the old days in tennis when there were real characters. I hated McEnroe when he was in his prime, but I loved to watch him play and cheer on his opponent. Many of the top players back then had personalities (McEnroe, Conners, Nastasie etc.). Sampras just bored me silly, and with federer I can admire his tennis, but when I watch him play I really don't care if he wins or loses. He is simply boring. Even the interview after the match I thought Roddick handled it well but Federer's just put me to sleep.
It is also not just tennis. So many sports stars in all sports these days seem to get to the crossroads and sell their personality to the devil for an extra edge on their game.

Has it finished, now?
Will I be able to go back into the centre of Wimbledon, and maybe even use Wimbledon station without having to force my way through thousands of slack-jawed f*ckwits who stare at ticket machines in wonderment, before spending 30 minutes deciding where they want to go to?
Anyway, who won? That nice German chap, Becker? Or someone else?

It's o.k. Puskas they've gone now. It's safe to go out again, but before you do, maybe repeating a few tantric mantras might prepare yourself. When you start rambling about nice German chaps I must say it is a little disconcerting.Puskas wrote:Has it finished, now?

Why's everyone saying it was such a great game? There were about 3 breaks of serve in the whole 600 games or whatever it was. It was basicially one bloke booming a big serve that couldn't be returned and then the other doing likewise. Granted it was rather close, but only because neither could get near the other's service games, making it boring as hell.
That's Wimbledon and has been for a long time. It was great because it was so tight. Waiting for the slip up that could or would decide the match. If you want exciting rallies watch the French Open.jimbo wrote:Why's everyone saying it was such a great game? There were about 3 breaks of serve in the whole 600 games or whatever it was.
