Dani Jarque found dead

There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

Dani Jarque found dead

Post by Bruno » Sat Aug 08, 2009 9:38 pm

MADRID — The skipper of Spanish top flight side Espanyol, Dani Jarque, has died from a heart attack while on a pre-season training camp in Italy, Spanish media reported Saturday.

The 26-year-old Jarque was reported to have died at the hotel where the team were staying in the town of Coviciana. He was found after teammates realised he had not shown for a meal.

Espanyol did not immediately confirm the news.

Jarque's death comes two years after the death, also from heart failure, of Sevilla defender Antonio Puerta, who died aged 22 after having collapsed during the opening game of the Spanish La Liga season.
Good player, what a terrible thing to happen.

Marca reported he was on the phone to his girlfriend and all of a sudden she heard the receiver drop to the floor - medics found him dead in his room.

RIP
Was right all along

Holy shit, I interviewed him a few years ago. Super nice lad. So young, and this was going to be his season, as he just got the captaincy of the team he loved. So unfair :(

Upsetting to hear. A very strong, good player coming into his prime.

Allow me to be perfectly honest. Being as I have little interest in football beyond these shores, I've never heard of the guy. But what terrible, shocking news. RIP.

I echo this - the guy sounds a bit like Kevin Nolan, young lad, captained a team he'd been at from a young age. RIP.

A dreadfully sad story. V.I., given that this is the second such incident in Spain in recent years, do you think they are adequately screening for heart problems?

The question has been raised indeed. But the authopsy hasn't been concluded yet, so we don't know if there was some kind of negligency in tracking Jarque's health.

And it's actually the third incident in a major club in recent years. Rubén de La Red, fortunately, survived.
