I think he's still going, about three years since I saw him, long retired of course. He'll be a fair age now. Rum old bird, he once put diaorhea powder in the drinks of a few idiots acting the prat in his place. They never went back. His after- hours were legendary as you probably know, although he was very selective who he let in.

Remarkable. Just got back from being away and wanted nothing other than beans on toast (only I had a glass of milk with mine).

tonight - so simple - so very good...

smoked salmon, philly, ritz crackers, pepper, lemon juice - great starter.

sea bream, new potatoes, asparagus, broccoli, mangetouts (green veg needing eating)...

me - a little st emillion... she - aussie chardonnay/sauvignon blanc...

stilton - port...

no rum, no mint, no soda... no mojitos

but all the rest pretty good...

taken loin chops out of freezer: given weather forecast, I need to put a hotpot on before going to the match... and have a feeling we may need comfort food after...

I feel compelled to give this place a quick heads-up. Las Iguanas on Deansgate int' citeh centorr (alongside Moon Under Water, Dining Room etc).
Four of us from work were out for the evening and, as you can imagine, everywhere in Manny was heaving with office bashes and this place was no exception. Anyway, we asked if they could possibly squeeze us in somewhere which they duly went out of their way and did.
Superb place (Latin themed), first class service and excellent nosebag. We shared Tapas to start and for main I had an excellent Brazilian fish dish - PESCADO CON COCO
Fresh haddock, fat Chilean blue mussels in their shells, crayfish tails in a light, fragrant
saffron & coconut broth with little new potatoes, cannelloni beans & baby tomatoes.

I've just robbed that off their menu. Can you tell?

I've just learned that it's an independently owned chain. I've also just learned that they have a place in the Trafford Centre too, but I avoid that place like the plague.

So if you're in Manny give it a go. I will again.

Just got back from Felicinis opposite the Palace Theatre on Oxford Road Manchester. Bit pricey when you add the drinks, but a really excellent meal. Chargrilled Pork
Braised red cabbage with apple & red currants, grain mustard & mash potato

Finally got to El Rincon tonight, after seeing White Christmas at the Lowry with the folks.

Generally terrific, with special mentions going to the crabs' claws and the langostinos con bacon.

Only if you're El Skinflinto. Otherwise as expected, I'd say!

Well, we only had table drinks and the bill for 12 was £530 with service charges etc. Hardly skinflint?

Good place, Tango - had a few celebratory meals there... and they used to have a good early evening meal offer, i seem to remember, which was good value, pre theatre...

you had house white with slow braised beef with shallots and red wine sauce...

call yourself a christian... only a feckin heathen with so many stains on his conscience it no longer mattered could do that... another million well-deserved years in purgatory, and serve you feckin right...

The Felicinis in Monton is terrible, as is the one in Didsbury.. I haven't tried the one in town as the others put me off. You'd be hard pushed to find a better Italian than Puccini's in Swinton, well beating my second fave San Carlo
