I hate Sunday trading hours. Pointless and outdated.

I used to love it when nearly everything was shut on a sunday. Its a good excuse to use the word "no" without needing an excuse. Its an underused word, we should use it more. "Are you doing anything on Sunday?" "No."

Haha. Remeber Bolton Holidays? The entire bloody town used to close down for two weeks. If you hadn't gone away you were stumped.

And Bruce means the 'entire' town. Wakes fortnight (usually last week in June, first week in July, blinds came down on all the shops and the town centre was like Tombstone). I remember going to Bolton Palais on the Saturday the holidays ended. The Ray Ellington Quartet were playing second week: when they came on stage Ellington looked round and said " Where the hell have you all been all week?". Apart from the odd corner shop, nobody ever opened on Sundays then. Blackpool, on the other hand....

But it's every week, not just weather-related. Every Sunday at 5pm everything stops, for no apparent reason. Sack it off. It's outdated.

Hope you remember that Pru,if you ever have a job that calls for you to work weekends. If I remember rightly, one of a unions purposes was to get reasonable social hours and less of the working ones. People managed fine when there was no Sunday trading. Also, why are things classed as outdated just because they don't fit personal agendas? A lot of the people forced to work will have families who work all week or are at school and who they'd maybe like to spend their weekends with. Not nit-picking, but do Uni's work Sundays? Live and let live. Life is rarely convenient. No offence.

Bishy, to clarify, of course I meant the restrictions on Sunday Trading, it should be allowed to open any time, like any other day. Tescos HAVE to shut at 6pm, and it means I can't get food! It's so pointless.

TD your point about working hours is a valid one, but there are already limits on hours in a working week, and Sunday trading restrictions don't apply to places like factories anyway, only shops. It's an outdated throwback to times when everybody went to church. If folk wanted to not open on Sundays, fair enough, but they shouldn't be forbidden from doing!

Today I'm angry about Sunday Trading. What is the sodding point? In typically dopey post Xmas not started back at uni yet reverie I wandered to Tesco just now, to find it shut. Why?! It serves no purpose to my mind, and is an outdated idea. Very few people go to church anymore, or actively practise religion, and it's just inconvenient. If you don't want to work Sundays because of your beliefs then fine, but don't make me have to try to do a big shop in an off license PLEASE!

Go on, how many shops are open there on a Sunday ? All you can do there is pop on a pink dressing gown & mince about on your balcony smoking a cherute from a cigarette holder.

Seriously though, it was annoying there until I managed to find a Spar that was open 24/7. I loved that shop. Otherwise, yep, nothing. It was annoying there and it's annoying here. All pointless.

I used to have a shop and for a few years used to open the doors from 0800 to 2000 Monday through Saturday and 0900 to 1700 on Sundays. Fortunately I didn't have staff as, even after a few years, the extra hours were not worth the trouble. I only did it as a customer service as a significant proportion of my clientele was commuters to 'the big smoke' and would leave early and get back latish. It's about a 1hour 15 minute trip to the city (assuming the train is on time), longer as a rule if driving.

So these days if I turn up at a shop and find it closed I simply shrug, walk away and berate myself for not noting its opening hours.

If any one of you cannot organise yourself to buy the staples of life with due diligence then you have only yourself to blame.

When I don't realise till 6.01pm that is Sunday then YES. Obviously my own idiocy is partly to blame as well, but if such a pointless rule didn't exist then I wouldn't be hungry!

Today I'm totally p*****d off with the so-called anti-whaling group currently patrolling the Southern Ocean in order to garner publicity (and therefore money) with the so-called intent of stopping Japanese whaling exploits.

I chuckled when it was announced that this particular organisation's so-called nimble attack craft couldn't get out of the way of a 500 ton 'security' vessel and as a result suffered serious bow damage. Right! I now await with glee the ping-pong ball accusations, the rebuttals and the draining of said organisation's financial resources as a result. There are times I wish I had studied law - particularly maritime law.

Yes, there is a number of 'so-called' in that. The 'nimble attack craft' is indeed nimble, and from my reading weighs about 15 tons or less and can attain 45 knots in an incredibly short space of time. Nevertheless it managed to sustain damage from a lumbering 500 ton vessel with limited maneuvering capabilities. One has to wonder.

Pity we've developed a claim and compensation culture for people who don't wear the right footwear (fashion boots with spike heels and ordinary high heels I've seen staggering around town this week) and can't accept they have to behave differently and take a bit of care in these conditions. (like the middle-aged woman on the TV news who decided to jog down the street on any icy pavement and then looked pained and surprised when she finished up on her ass.) What next, ice-whiplash? Everything is somebody else's fault these days. Life gets dafter by the day. Oh, hey..it's snowing again and it's all coming from America. Yanks out.

That is absolutely utterly ridiculous. Whichever political party wants to come forward and denounce this "wipe your arse for you" culture then they may well steal my vote.

Only this morning I was telling folk that it's ridiculous that people sit on their hands moaning because the council hasn't helped them and to do something about it. My uncle lives on a quiet cul de sac in a village near Peterborough, and they got off their bums and shovelled the whole street because it was a bit glass lake. I thought "good on em", bit of initiative. I didn't think it was right we sat back and expected it all done for us, a bit of community spirit and all that.

Then it turns out...we actually should sit back. We should do nothing. We should let the "experts" do it and moan if not done. Absolutely wanker-level of ridiculousness. Very disillusioned with this country.
