Today (as opposed to tonight), I have The Hazards of Love by the Decemberists on my iPod at work.

And, I have to say, it gets a "Really Rather Good" mark. Some quite jolly pop tunes - why did no one tell me how good this was before?

Young man, young man (all condescensions are present there  ) I first got listening to Danny Baker when he started up a football fan's phone-in on BBC Radio 5 called 'The 606'. That must've been about 17 or 18 years ago. We were in the 3rd Division at the time and I used to lie in the bath listening to this 'football fan's fan' prior to going out, listening to work-a-day supporters ringing in to talk about stuff that surely only ever happens at their own place! Players with Toblerones for boots and Fifty Pence shaped heads etc. etc.
The guy is a broacasting genius.
Opened one show with REM - Losing My Religion

Think Millwall had let in 6 at home

Managed by an English bloke, son of a Scotsman

Baker hated him....really hated him

Bloke got sacked soon after and had a modicum of success ooop North

repeated listens lead me to think this is one of the best albums of the year so far.

I'm revisiting Nina Simone and have been playing this very loud on repeat...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkDtrheq ... re=related

incidentally... I drove up to Herefordceistershire the other day with my daughter - and we each picked a CD - she chose Katie Melua and I chose Nina..

Katie tries to sing the blues - and while she has a nice melodious voice - and I would grudgingly admit to quite liking "closest thing to crazy" - she goes on to sing a song call summat like - "your first lesson in singing the blues"

and it has to be said - nina simply stiffs her into a cocked hat - Melua simply does not sound like her life has been anything vaguely close to qualification for "singing the blues" - and thus (to me) sounds offensive when doing it..

nina - on the other hand - wow!
