I'm not sure how much faith we should put in the opinions of a ormer (third-rate) professional athlete. He appears to think cavemen built huts. Surely they would have been called hutmen then. What he doesn't understand in blaming people for their government is that they were not as lucky as he was, or we were, in this regard. He has never lived in a dictatorship where the people don't get to change the government that easily. The other nation on the island threw off their US supported dictator in the 1960s and became democratic. The Dominicans are in much better shape than the Haitians, who became 'democratic' much later and with far less success - the political system is still far from stable. Nonetheless there is still a great deal of poverty in the DR. Problems of history take years to fix. Shirley suggests that if they don't like things they should move. Many have - mostly to Montreal - but you have to be lucky to be accepted in another country, or a young orphan who is adoptable.

The point I agree with is that decisions were made by the Haitian people that contributed to the problems. Principally, if you're destitute, DON'T HAVE CHILDREN. I've always maintained that nearly every single problem in the world can be solved by condoms.

In the 1950's, Korea was on par with many African countries in terms of development, or lack thereof. Now it's hard to tell the difference between Seoul and Seattle in a lot of ways. And that was with a senile autocrat running the country in the 1950's and military dictatorship ruling from 1961 to 1987. It should be noted, as well, that the Haitians democratically elected Voodoo nutjob Papa Doc who is responsible for many of the current problems. I don't know enough about the history of Haiti to say what has gone so dreadfully wrong, but I'd go out on a limb and say it's not all the fault of other countries.

Good luck with the condoms thing HP. Might I suggest that you start the campaign a few thousand miles away in a corner of Italy though. Seeing as the majority of Haitians are Roman Catholic.
