Megson to Hull??

There ARE other teams(we'd have no-one to play otherwise) and here's where all-comers can discuss the wider world of football......

On the planet where you aren't going to pay compensation to get a manager for 9 games.

Nor is a manager going to leave a permanent secure position for a "9 game" cameo.
Why does it have to be a cameo? Get in O'Driscoll, if he keeps them up great, if he doesn't, you have a young hungry manager who is 'proven' at Championship level. Used to working on a small budget, and gets results.
It seems that they only want someone till the end of the season. I guess its "hedge your bets".

O'Driscoll won't be that cheap as thats what put Burnley off. My guess is IF Hull go down they will go into administration pretty quickly and probably at that point will want to re-assess their options.

I think if I was O'Driscoll I'd rather stay at Doncaster for now than move to Hull right now.
I didn't realise Hull were that fooked financially? If so then fair enough. I'd be staying at DOncaster too. Don't understand why Burnley didn't go for O'Driscoll over Laws though!
Apparently Dowie has just said he has had no contact with Hull! So who knows?

I think Hull are in a financial mess which is why Pearson went back as Chairman to replace Duffen who left them in a state. A debt of 40 million or so I believe and that debt unlike ours is owed to a variety of "not so understanding as Eddie Davies" creditors. I think if they go down administration would happen at some point.

I think with O'Driscoll Burnley would have had to pay compensation, this would have taken time to negotiate and they were in a hurry. I also believe that they had tried to appoint Laws when Coyle went there only for Laws to say he wanted to stay with Sheffield Weds at the time, he was doing quite well there.

Its interesting as the longer it drags on the more you wonder whether they do have someone lined up or whether sacking Brown will become a massive massive misjudgement.

Cue Mark Hughes walking into the KC!!

I believe, as BWFCI said, they were put off by the compensation Doncaster wanted. They'd apparently agreed personal terms with O'Driscoll.

How much did Doncaster want, anyone know? It can't be as much as we paid for Coyle surely? And Laws was clearly never going to work. He's their Megson, without the keeping them up and bringing a bit of uninspiring short term stability. Chairman took a fancy to him when he was doing OK a few years earlier, then when the job came up, though sod it, the fact he has turned out to be a bit cr*p doesn't matter.

Didn't Moyes leave Preston for Everton under similar circumstances?

Thought he went to Everton after we beat Preston in the play-offs.

Or is my mind playing tricks on me?

Sacking Brown is starting to look like a more terrible move as each failed Prem manager is linked with the job. They fought hard to almost get a deserved point against Arsenal, only losing to a goalkeeping error in injury time, so the spirit was clearly still there. How a Dowie or a Megson can get to know the squad and turn them into a mid table team for 9 games is beyond me, Mourinho or Houdini would struggle to do that.

They either needed to have sacked Brown earlier, thus giving the new man more time, or stuck with him till the end, even if he was going to murder another football anthem at the last home game of the season.

Nowt to do with the thread but you've just reminded me of a comment from a Sky News presenter last week.

"This is deja vu, all over again."

How do they get these jobs?
That's an old quote so I guess it was said with humour. Was it Ron Atkinson who first said it? I forget.
I dunno. But she said it with a straight face.

We paid 1M for Coyle. I believe Donny started at a bit more than that for O'Driscoll.

The Mirror are reporting that Ian Dowie has got the Hull job, Gary Megson was never a real contender after all....
(unless they couldn't afford him)
I must admit, i'm very surprised if this is true...i wouldn't have thought he'd be good enough to keep them up.

Iain Dowie has been appointed the new manager of Hull.

Dowie was chosen from chairman Adam Pearson's shortlist and will be unveiled at a press conference tomorrow morning (Wednesday) at the KC Stadium.

The former Charlton, Coventry, QPR and Crystal Palace boss has signed a short-term contract until the end of the season when the manager's position will be reviewed and will pocket a £1million bonus if he can keep Hull up.

Dowie, 45, met Pearson for talks this afternoon before the final decision was made by the Tigers board last night.

Dowie, who is based in the North, is thrilled at the chance to get back into management and he has been out of football since the end of last season when he was Alan Shearer's No 2 at Newcastle.

Pearson was effectively left with just Dowie after he was forced to discount virtually all of the names on his shortlist.

Gary Megson, Alan Curbishley, Paul Jewell and Mark Hughes were all ruled out on Monday within hours of Phil Brown's sacking.

Portsmouth boss Avram Grant pulled out of the running yesterday morning, while a shock move for Terry Venables never got off the ground.
Never give up on something that you can't go a day without thinking about.

Or something along those lines..
I refer back to my previous statement.

I wonder if Hull fans have reconsidered?

If I'd been asked to choose between Megson and Dowie at the time Megson was appointed, not sure I wouldn't have picked Dowie to be honest.

Unless I've misread what you're saying, you seem to be suggesting that Hull fans might want to reconsider their view of Megson, given that Dowie has been appointed?

I'm saying in the same position, I might not want to reconsider.

Wasn't there also something about O'Driscoll being shown around and saying Burnley's training facilities were a bit crap compared to Doncaster's, so would need a bit of doing up?

You said that given the choice when we sacked Sammy Lee, you might've picked Dowie. That's fine, but that was 2 and 1/2 years ago. In that time, Megson has had a fairly succesful time here, while Dowie has been sacked three times, including failing miserably to keep Newcastle up.

If you still think Dowie is better than Megson now, then.......... ok, I guess.

Well, the fans made their views on Megson known ... so this is the alternative. Blimey ... you'd be depressed wouldn't you ?!
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
