Like Hallowe'en I suspect it is something in its current form that was introduced to England by North America. No one paid any attention to St. Patrick's day when I lived in England (or St. George, David or Andrew for that matter). However, St. Patrick's day parades have a long history in Boston (the first in 1737) and Montreal (annually since 1824). By comparison the first parade in Ireland was in 1931.

Works me up how folk who don't normally drink it suddenly get on the guiness, which means a queue as each of their 9 pints for mates has to settle. B*stards. Anyway I'm off oot. See y'all some time tomorrow, I hope!

I've never known an Irishman yet who needed St Patrick's day as an excuse to drink Guinness. Most of the St Paddy celebrators are as plastic as Manc fans and St Patrick was an Englishman anyway, just as much as St George wasn't.

Hail glorious St Patrick, dear saint of our isle
On us thy poor children, bestow a sweet smile.

There's a comedian - can't remember who - who complains that he doesn't like New Year's Eve because it's "Amateurs' Night" - a whole load of people who don't normally drink going out, messing the place up and causing a nuisance. Meanwhile those of us who put in the effort, day after day, week after week, are crowded out of our favourite pubs.

St Patrick's day is that all over again.

I am, however, reminded of my Swiss friend who once claimed that English blokes need an excuse to drink. I think she may have a point. I would, nonetheless, contend that it is part of the English Genius that we can always find one.

Like (mainly southerners and i am allowed to say that) who calling BirMINGham - bermenam

Paul Merson is very good at this and I often wonder what his first language actually is, listening to him talking about a Bermenam vs Ever'on game with Ar'e'a was a joy!

Has anyone tried to do an impression of Paul Merson saying 'Hull' ?

I have, it's fun. Sort of, like, 'aw' ..."corner kick to 'Aw' "
