Nowt wrong with Paddy's day. It's an excuse to go get fooked. Obviously excuses aren't needed, but it's nice to have one. It's our football AGM tonight, £1200 behind the bar. Yes please. Having just got relegated (which I'm angry about) if I can remember my own name tonight, I'll be dissapointed.

Like Hallowe'en I suspect it is something in its current form that was introduced to England by North America. No one paid any attention to St. Patrick's day when I lived in England (or St. George, David or Andrew for that matter). However, St. Patrick's day parades have a long history in Boston (the first in 1737) and Montreal (annually since 1824). By comparison the first parade in Ireland was in 1931.

Until I find out other people in another department have had consecutive pay rises.

There's a comedian - can't remember who - who complains that he doesn't like New Year's Eve because it's "Amateurs' Night" - a whole load of people who don't normally drink going out, messing the place up and causing a nuisance. Meanwhile those of us who put in the effort, day after day, week after week, are crowded out of our favourite pubs.

I am, however, reminded of my Swiss friend who once claimed that English blokes need an excuse to drink. I think she may have a point. I would, nonetheless, contend that it is part of the English Genius that we can always find one.
