The Masters

My personal fancy is for there to be no holes in one in the tournament, which you can get at around 8/11 on Betfair (or at least you could last night).
There's only been one in the last 5 years (Poulter on 16 last year), and only 19 in the 72 year history of the Masters. In the last 10 years this bet would've won 7 times.
My guess is that if you can avoid the fortune of someone using the hill when the pin's in a low position on 16 then you're home and dry - aces on the front nine are as rare as hen's teeth (only two since 1972), and amen corner's not seen one for over two decades.
8/11 is a massive price for me, should be far shorter.

I think it was last year Gary Player finished 17 over par for four rounds. That's averaging just less than five handicap golf per round . He was 74.Montreal Wanderer wrote:You have to admire Tom Watson (though he broke my heart once or twice). What a competitor at his age.

Well it impresses me. Tom is only 60 odd and, IIRC, did pretty well in last year's Open. They are also gentlemen, which I would no longer say about Mr. Woods.TANGODANCER wrote:In 2009 Gary Player finished 17 over par over four rounds. That's a bit less than a five handicap. He's a boy isn't he?! He's had his cock in some clunge, that lad. Absolutely rocketed in my estimation - I had him down as being a proper tedious git.Montreal Wanderer wrote:They are also gentlemen, which I would no longer say about Mr. Woods.
I can't understand why some of his sponsors have withdrawn contracts, I mean lets face it, if it's the lads market that you're after then the revelations regarding his private life are heaven sent!
May the bridges I burn light your way
What pissed me off last night was Peter Alliss' attitude towards him. Not satisfied with criticising him in his newspaper column last week, he proceeded to have a go at every opportunity. After Tiger's incredible shot on the 9th, Alliss muttered something along the lines of 'the execution isn't that difficult and it's just luck that it ends up so close', and then having played a near perfect tee shot to the 12th, Alliss mumbled 'he talks about spin control, but if he could then that wouldn't have come back at all and stayed right next to the flag'. Bitter old man!

Alliss was a decent golfer, but he's always been a first-class snob. His father was also a decent golfer but Alliss was brought up into money and has a demeaning attitude to anyone without it. His comments on the fees at the Masters venue as "quite reasonable "( read small change) came across as an example. For him, maybe they are. I'm no big Tiger fan, but that shot was sheer class. Alliss's comments just smacked of jealousy to me.jimbo wrote:What pissed me off last night was Peter Alliss' attitude towards him. And Choi is going like a train. Wouldn't be surprised to see him maintain it. One to watch.

A procession will do me fineratbert wrote:It was a great opening round for many reasons yesterday (golden oldies, British contenders) but one can't help feeling that the outcome is now a foregone conclusion. If Tiger does win, lets not have a procession and the others give him a game...
And that 11/2 I took will look like the bookies biggest fcuk up of all time

You are likely correct on the theory that any publicity is good. He is now more in the public eye than he ever was. My 'gentleman' reference referred to something else. I always felt professional golfers, unlike other professional athletes, were somehow more honourable and did not stoop to low tactics. They would penalize themselves if the ball moved slightly or infringed other rules that no one would notice. If someone has shown themselves to be dishonest or a cheat in something else, I am no longer so confident of their golf ethics. However, I may have borrowed Tango's glasses on the subject.Bruce Rioja wrote:He's a boy isn't he?! He's had his cock in some clunge, that lad.
