"A Room for Romeo Brass" was on last night, a bit too late really, i put it on record but still couldnt stop watching it till the end. Brilliant brilliant film! to think Shane Meadows was younger than i am now when he made it makes me sick! & Paddy Considine is one top notch actor! that scene at the seaside is still potent now, no matter how many times you see it!

Hadn't seen this before. Kept my attention from beginning to end. Unusual and thoroughly enjoyable.
Yeah - very good movie...
Indeed it is. Norton's a good actor so you'd expect not much else. It was out at the same time to a similar film - The Prestige. Well worth a watch as well.
The Prestige arguably even better. Amazing these two came out at the same time!

Just realised that whilst watching Italy-Paraguay I've missed Dispatches. Hope 4OD are quick on the draw.

This....

http://www.the-wanderer.co.uk/boards/vi ... hp?t=19251

... I was quietly surprised actually. I was expecting it to be an absolute shocker of a film, and the acting left a lot to the imagination especially early doors, but it's not a bad film actually. One scene is probably the sickest thing I have ever seen, but I guess that was to be expected given the plot!!

I mentioned on here agaes ago that I'd ordered a BBC DVD - Shakespeare Retold. Tonight I've only just got round do digging it out. Just watched a modern day version of Midsummer Night's Dream. Absolutely superb. They've used a Centre Parc as the setting and it really works. Dean Lennox Kelly (Kev - Shameless) is superb as Puck, as is Jonny Vegas as Bottom. Highly recommended.

You of course loved the Octagon's 'updating' also... Be interesting to see what David thacker does with R & J, the shakespeare that has lent itself to so many 'updatings' - West side Stort, Baz Luhrmann etc...

My father won't have anything to do with this stuff - I think shakespeare without tights offends him... Myself, the replaying of those eternal themes as homage to the man himself simply confirms what a great, great dramatist he was, across cultures, across centuries... Wonderful...

I really couldn't agree more, William. Has your Father attempted an updated version of any or is he not even prepared to entertain the idea? I must say, I decided to watch The Dream first off the DVD knowing it would be a fairly easy sell and if I didn't like that then I'd probably be stuffed with the rest. Now I can't wait to watch the other three. Next up - The Taming of the Shrew. Kate is an opposition MP who is instructed to find a husband to make her more electable. Superb.

The link for the series is http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/shakespeare/tvdramas.shtml

The link for the DVD on Play.com is http://www.play.com/DVD/DVD/4-/728567/S ... oduct.html

But please note: The DVD doesn't contain Waste of Shame, and also I seem to remember only paying a fiver for it so it may be cheaper elsewhere.

Whilst I can sympathise somewhat with your dad, I think a lot of modernised remakes live or die by how well they're done. I can remember being a bit horrified at a version of Lorca's Blood Wedding set in Ramsbottom, yet thorougly enjoyed the same thing done in a modern Spanish dance studio. Carmen done the same way was also good, and Carmen Jones set in a modern boxing world was also creditable. Joe Macbeth and West side Story both turned out well as modern settings from Shakespeare plots (although the star-crossed love theme of Romeo and Juliet was even before Shakespeare) . I don't think it necessary to see one as old -fashioned and the other riding on its back. They can both be enjoyed with credit given to the originator for fine ideas. (To that end, I don't like plot interference) Best of both worlds, and that's from an old traditionalist.

Did anyone else catch "Ben: Diary of a Heroin Addict" on Sky Three tonight? I've just finished watching it now, that was some seriously grim, tough viewing - and should be shown primte-time on some terrestrial channel to show to as many people as possible the reality of such a waste of life that drugs can cause

So, in need of a pick-me-up, I've just ordered Short Circuit on dvd from amazon!

Hey Laserlips, Your mama was a snowblower!

Good choice, one of them films that i used to watch and watch as a kid untill the the tape wore out!

i was 18 before i realised the song 'more than a woman' was from 'Saturday night fever' rather than Short Circuit! Heard a rumour a while back that they might be making a third!?

Flight of the Navigator was another one of my all time favourites as well, but it seems like the only cheap ones available on amazon arent proper copies
