Hmm, question for you, William. I've seen the film, it's a factual account carried off, I thought brilliantly, by miladdo's portrayal of Cloughie. Question is - is the book still worth reading after having seen the film? Difficult one I know as I'm going arse about face, but in your considered opinion?William the White wrote:It's ok. but the book is much, much better.boltonboris wrote:The Damned United is on the Beeb at 9 tonight (available on HD too). Not seen in yet, despite wanting to for ages! Looking forward to it

See, General, I watched The Da Vinci Code without having read the book. At the end of it I was left berating myself for going to see what, to me, was an absolute pile of predictable shite in film (I'd sussed that bird's link to the bloodline about halway through, yet that turned out to be the big reveal) dumbed down to feck for the hard of thinking, but recognised also that the book must've been a cracking read. Still, there's no point in me reading it now as I know the ending.General Mannerheim wrote:i always watch films first, ive usually never heard of the book until a film is made of it.
have had both good and disappointing experiences.
With the Cloughie thing I'm guessing that it's probably different as we all know the general facts of the matter anyway.
Also, having read The Ghost, do you know if the film's worth seeing. My concerns are immediately aroused by them having to call the film 'The Ghost Writer', presumably to differentiate it for the benefit of 4uckwits hoping to see the old back-scuttle getting doled out at the potter's wheel.

Just right. I bought the DVD after reading the book and was bitterly disappointed. It's what comes of film directors and producers thinking they know best. The book was such a success that the film makers couldn't wait to get their hands on it. That's when it all went wrong.Bruce Rioja wrote: See, General, I watched The Da Vinci Code without having read the book. Definitely, Bruce - it has much more depth and intensity - it's very good...Bruce Rioja wrote:Hmm, question for you, William. My opinion might not be as considered as don William, but the book adds a lot more to it, a lot lot more. The flashbacks are more interesting and woven in to really tell the tale of Cloughie and Taylor. Factual, there's strong suggestions it's a load of bollocks (Cloughies wife) but it's a belting readBruce Rioja wrote:Hmm, question for you, William. Just been to see Inception - didn't really think it would be my bag, big budget, all action, semi scifi, special effects n'all that, but 9.4 score on IMDB convinced me and I'm fookin glad it did - ruddy marvellous from start to finish! Brilliant. Can not imagine seeing it on the small screen now tho, you gotta go watch it at the flicks!
I've done that too, and am similarly considering the worth of reading the book. Along fairly parallel lines, I never had the 'pleasure' of seing wankfest 'Avatar' in the cinema, if this ever does come out on DVD, is the story worth it? My preconception, 'unob-fecking-tanium?!', is not?Bruce Rioja wrote:Hmm, question for you, William. I saw it 20 plus years ago in a London cinema... one of those occasions when there was a silence at the end, the audience needing to reassemble itself before walking away, a few tears, a slow leaving of seats...Bruce Rioja wrote:Finally got round to watching Au Revoir Les Enfants.
I watched it without knowing that it's autobiographical.
Brilliant - did you think so, Bruce?

Absolutely, William, and had I not watched it home alone then I think I'd have been one of the ones slowly shuffling out of the cinema too. A toughie.William the White wrote:I saw it 20 plus years ago in a London cinema... one of those occasions when there was a silence at the end, the audience needing to reassemble itself before walking away, a few tears, a slow leaving of seats...Bruce Rioja wrote:Finally got round to watching Au Revoir Les Enfants.
