They need to go further in my view and start to make cuts in the sacred cows of the NHS and Welfare state that must account for over 60% of the spend.BWFC_Insane wrote:I've given up with any hope for the future of this country with this "Lot" in charge.
Most depressing time I can ever remember, and its only going to get worse as they strip away and strip away, privatising things via the backdoor whilst meddling in the very way they said they "wouldn't".
All I can hope for is that when "they've" gone that they don't come back again in my lifetime!

don't worry - neither of those have ever been a sacred cow to a Tory government.... Fook it lets make sure more poor people die. And if we can't get em that way, we'll just make em live on the streets. That way they'll freeze to death eventually with no welfare state.
But hey lets look on the positive side, the bankers are throwing parties again. Bonus....

Believe it or not I agree that we should give that up too.thebish wrote: don't worry - neither of those have ever been a sacred cow to a Tory government.... Trident is one huge giant sacred cow though...
Next we should reduce our overseas embassies to 20% of the current level.

in 2008/2009 - total spend was in the region of £621billion
NHS - about £95billion
Welfare State - about 73billion (not including pensions)
which - combined - is about £168billion
which amounts to about £27%
so - your 60% is some way off.....

Well the world and this country in particular is overpopulated so I'll give you thats one way to start reducing itBWFC_Insane wrote:

As for the welfare state i'd not hand a penny out to anyone unless they have done something for it, whether that be sweeping the streets, cutting grass verges picking up dog shit or removing graffiti.
And the bankers, well they do make a return on investments you may have to rely on for your pension or the taxes they pay to prop up this benifit dependant society we live in.

Ok twas a guesstimate but if we want to both be exact then in 2010 its predicted to be:
Total spend £669 billion minus interest payments of £31 billion = £638 billion of controllable spend.
£33.5 billion on sickness and disability in the £117.2 billion spent on pensions.
Healthcare = £119.5 billion
Welfare = £60.4 billion
which added up = £213.4 billion which is 33% of all spend
which imo is 5 times what it should be.

errr... I don't know how you can claim a figure is exact if you are calling it a prediction!!!
the reason I quoted earlier figures was because they have been audited. A projected/predicted figure is in no sense of the word "exact".
but still a very long way short of your original 60% figure...Big_Girl_Oral_Explosion wrote:

so - in 2010 you think the sum total of spending in the NHS and on the Welfare state should be a tiny bit over £42billion?
care to suggest how you would in practical terms get it down to that figure?
a little bit of itemisation for comparisons-sake would help...

1. Stop building these palatial health centres and surgeries immediately
2. Cut management staff in NHS by 50%
3. Stop all cosmetic treatment.
4. No treatment of obesity, drink or smoking related illness.
Welfare
1. Nobody get any handouts without giving 25 hours for work of some description be it street cleaning or whatever.
2. No issue of free housing to large families.
3. Anyone applying for any child related benefits must agree to sterilisation.
4. Scrap all incapacity benefit
5. Any benefit should only be paid in tokens for food shelter etc not cash.
Just a start but a few steps in the right direction

so - as Child Benefit is a universal benefit (ie - not means-tested) - that would be sterilisation for everyone who has had a child?
I doubt your measures would get us anywhere near down to £42billion
can you itemise what's left?

I do like number 3 in the Welfare section. Well thought out and so obviously the way forward in the new liberal 21st century Britain.Big_Girl_Oral_Explosion wrote:NHSthebish wrote:so - in 2010 you think the sum total of spending in the NHS and on the Welfare state should be a tiny bit over £42billion?

Ah the old the NHS shouldn't pay for anything I'm not likely to get myself argument then. Well then I propose no treatment for any selfish tw*ts who get ill. how much do you think this will save?
2. Cut management staff in NHS by 50%
management costs - currently £1.85billion - so will save £0.9billion
3. Stop all cosmetic treatment.
what percentage of the health budget is this?
4. No treatment of obesity, drink or smoking related illness.
how do you prove an illness (like lung cancer) is smoking related? no heart operations for fat people? how fat? how would you define "obese" - not BMI surely? would you have the NHS refuse to treat a teenager who got alcohol poisoning?
Welfare
1. Nobody get any handouts without giving 25 hours for work of some description be it street cleaning or whatever.
this would INCREASE the amount spent - as 25hrs work at the minimum wage > unemployment benefit
2. No issue of free housing to large families.
what do you mean by "large" families?
3. Anyone applying for any child related benefits must agree to sterilisation.
have you got any kids? and do you get Child Benefit - if so - do you send it back to the govt to spend elsewhere?
4. Scrap all incapacity benefit
why? - if you did - maybe save £18billion
5. Any benefit should only be paid in tokens for food shelter etc not cash.
so - you are making people work - and paying the minimum wage in food tokens? how does that save much money? how much do you think it wouold save??
Just a start but a few steps in the right direction
but NOWHERE NEAR the kind of savings you were calling for...
Hague statement in response to Guido Fawkes' rumours regarding his sexuality...
bloody hell guido“I feel it is necessary to issue this personal statement in response to press and internet speculation over the last ten days. Earlier this year a Sunday newspaper began questioning whether my marriage to Ffion was in trouble, and last week another media outlet asked whether there was a statement about our supposed separation. This seemed to be linked to equally untrue speculation surrounding the appointment of Christopher Myers as a Special Adviser. Christopher Myers has demonstrated commitment and political talent over the last eighteen months. He is easily qualified for the job he holds. Any suggestion that his appointment was due to an improper relationship between us is utterly false, as is any suggestion that I have ever been involved in a relationship with any man.
This speculation seems to stem from the fact that whilst campaigning before the election we occasionally shared twin hotel rooms. Neither of us would have done so if we had thought that it in any way meant or implied something else. In hindsight I should have given greater consideration to what might have been made of that, but this is in itself no justification for allegations of this kind, which are untrue and deeply distressing to me, to Ffion and to Christopher.
He has now told me that, as a result of the pressure on his family from the untrue and malicious allegations made about him, he does not wish to continue in his position. It is a pity that a talented individual should feel that he needs to leave his job in this way. Ffion and I believe that everyone has a right to a private life.
However, we now feel it necessary to give some background to our marriage because we have had enough of this continued and hurtful speculation about us. I have made no secret of the fact that Ffion and I would love to start a family. For many years this has been our goal. Sadly this has proved more difficult for us than for most couples. We have encountered many difficulties and suffered multiple miscarriages, and indeed are still grieving for the loss of a pregnancy this summer. We are aware that the stress of infertility can often strain a marriage, but in our case, thankfully, it has only brought us closer together.
It has been an immensely traumatic and painful experience but our marriage is strong and we will face whatever the future brings together. Several years ago one Sunday paper reported that Ffion was three months pregnant, without ever checking the story with us. This made even more difficult the fact that we had only just experienced another disappointment. We have never made this information public because of the distress it would cause to our families and would not do so now were it not for the untrue rumours circulating which repeatedly call our marriage into question. We wish everyone to know that we are very happily married.
It is very regrettable to have to make this personal statement, but we have often said to each other ‘if only they knew the truth…’ Well, this is the straightforward truth. I will not be making any further comment on these matters.”

Staggeringly dense? Maybe. Unrefined? Definitely, but not dense enough so as not to be able to clearly see the real agenda of you making those remarks within the context of the anti-Tory ones preceeding them. Critisism of Cameron's use of his new baby in public (which I too find nauseating) coming without any mention whatsoever of your man Blair's use of his son in an identical way is just your (piss poor, might I say?) attempt at political point scoring. (But not preachingthebish wrote:Bruce Rioja wrote:Two words - Leo Blair.thebish wrote:Don't be ridiculous - David Cameron has had a baby - we're all feeling happy and blessed and extending towards him and the coalition government a wave of touchy-feely mellow goodness....

bruce - when you try - you can be staggeringly dense. blair's use of little leo was equally nauseous - where did I suggest otherwise?

Indeed, BWFCI. I just thought that we'd moved on from 'that-lot-are-wankers' to dealing with the specifics and their effect on us individualy and collectively.BWFC_Insane wrote: Its called an opinion Bruce. at the time Blair did it - I commented that it was nauseous. at the time Cameron did it - it is still nauseous. I was not unfavourably comparing cameron with Blair - I was merely commenting unfavourably on Cameron as he is now the man in the big cheesy seat.Bruce Rioja wrote:Staggeringly dense? Maybe. as for seeing more christianity in Bernice than in me - I frankly don't give much of a monkeys how much "christianity" you see in me if you think that christianity is fawning over the cameron baby or not criticising your man Davey-buttock-face.

I was responding to your specific post. What you said previously is neither here nor there in relation to what you said in relation to the context of the thread at that point.
