It's not something unfamilir to me or a lot of Catholics Dujon, and you're right about the date. Not to intrude it too much in here, but you might find this interesting if you get a spare hour sometime:Dujon wrote:An intriguing and unexplained phenomenon, TANGO. It seems that according to contemporary reports some 70,000 people turned up to watch the promised final appearance of this apparition on 13th October 1917, although only the children claimed to see the Virgin Mary.TANGODANCER wrote: . . . Although set much later, the underlying theme was the appearances of the Virgin Mary to the three Portuguese village children in Fatima in 1912.
Sorry, I'm trawling through my lesser read books at the moment and this particular event is described within it.

surely no sane person would get anywhere on that site past the opening line:
Experts: Father Nicholas Gruner
I'd urge anybody to consider NOT spending an hour there - even if it is a spare one - it would be a better use of your time to drive long sharp nails into your groin....

Hey, it isn't compulsory bish. He might say the same about you, who knows? Just like everything else it's a matter of personal choice; not your taste, just pass on. Long sharp nails are quite cheap and easily available I believe.thebish wrote: is this a joke, Tango?

indeed - but - in your world of choice - how much credibility do you afford the notorious Father Nicholas Gruner? (and why!)TANGODANCER wrote:Hey, it isn't compulsory bish. Yes, I have some views on this, but this book forum isn't the place for a debate on religion bish. I can feel Zulu's 303 laser sight hovering.thebish wrote:indeed - but - in your world of choice - how much credibility do you afford the notorious Father Nicholas Gruner? not after a debate on religion - just doubting the wisdom of spending any spare time with anything that has Father Nicholas Gruner's name attached to it... I see no need for Zulu to be concerned at all...

Quite so, but to debate Nicolas Gruner we have to go into politics and religion, primarily Russian history in 1917 and the reasons for the timing of the Marian apparition. It's a deep topic. I'd be happy to discuss it in another thread, but not this one which is basically for everyones' book choices.thebish wrote: not after a debate on religion - just doubting the wisdom of spending any spare time with anything that has Father Nicholas Gruner's name attached to it... fair enough - but you did suggest going there was a good way to spend a spare hour! (it's not!) - and the site you linked is not a book choice - you introduced Gruner to the thread - not me.TANGODANCER wrote:Quite so, but to debate Nicolas Gruner we have to go into politics and religion, primarily Russian history in 1917 and the reasons for the timing of the Marian apparition. No, not so. I did state "not to intrude it too much in here" (exact words) and I was actually replying to Dujon who is familiar with the Fatima topic. The fact you consider the video not a good topic is purely your opinion only and carrries no more weight than mine.thebish wrote:fair enough - but you did suggest going there was a good way to spend a spare hour! but the "expert" on the video you linked is Gruner - but you say he is off topic?TANGODANCER wrote:No, not so. Cor, it's like talking to a a freaking Mynah bird. I put a link up for Dujon so as not to bore those who would find it of no interest on the Book thread. If you want to debate Gruner, start a Nicolas Gruner debate thread. We might both get banned, but what the hell....thebish wrote:but the "expert" on the video you linked is Gruner - but you say he is off topic?TANGODANCER wrote:No, not so. banned for discussing Gruner?? get a grip!
(no need for personal abuse Tango, surely..)
I just finished Black Swan Green by David Mitchell - on the strength of his "Cloud Atlas"
it isn't another Cloud Atlas - but then nobody has two Cloud Atlas's in them surely?
but...
it is a fascinating tale - perhaps because it describes a childhood roughly contemporary with mine - and it sounds very familiar - also set in the Malvern area near where my mum used to live - so, also interesting..
the style is actually like a written documentary of a child growing up with a stammer - and very deftly and subtly done - Mitchell is a serious writer...
also - it has a very bizarre and unexpected tie-in with one of the peripheral characters from Cloud Atlas - which is a bit of a weird experience - given that the books/themes are not in the least bit linked...

Okay, you're not a mynah bird.thebish wrote: (no need for personal abuse Tango, surely..)

Whilst on holiday I met a guy who was a serious book reader ( a guy of around my own age). An ex member of both the the Army Intelligence Service and the Prison service, he had a vast knowlege of classics, Plato, Horace, Catulus, Homer and even the campaigns of Julius Caesar. He was considered a bit of a local bore but I found him very interesting. When I asked him what was his favourite book he replied "Treasure Island". I liked that.

All well and good - apart from the fact that my comment was a long way away from an intervention. So, all bets forfeit and deposits lost.thebish wrote:Kerrrrrching!!
you see... what Zulu may not know is that me and Tango have a little rolling side-bet - the first one of us to reel Zulu into an intervention wins a tenner... Tango was a little blatant inviting Zulu earlier on - which was nearly cheating - but now i'm a tenner up!![]()
Unlucky.

But seriously - my Folio Society edition of Napoleon by Georges Lefebvre. I'm looking forward to it.
