there is no discernable scientific theory or finding in the pages you link to.

I think you are mistaking "science" for "science fiction" - completely different genres despite sounding the same....

there's no detecting in midsomer murders!!! that berjerac chump just fannies about until everyone is dead - then last man standing is the murderer....
i wish someone would murder his irritating wife and daughter... cully??
Oh, I entirely agree, absolute tosh, and every episode gets worse. :D The villain tonight thought he was Billy the Kid and saw everything Wild West style. John Nettles in flat hat, frock coat and a Wyatt Earp moustache was just unbelievable. A more unlikely Chief Inspector I can't imagine. I'm trying to give it up, honest.

Specsavers do hearing tests as well as eye tests don't you know? Probably special rates for clergy too. Mind you, I'm really looking forward to Indiana Jones and the Lost Secret of Atlantis.

in reply to Dujon.

All this, the manna thing, it's association with the Ark of the Covenant, the biblical views etc, etc (because anything you read into (and I did say "read into all this", not professed to be an expert, historian or scientist, jus someone who read about it)is inevitably linked to other related topics, and stated what I remembered, nothing more. You don't like the scientist I linked, fine, I'm sure you'll find other views and you can use Google just as well as I can (proven by your rapid potted history of the stated Frank whoever). Hitler employed a whole team of scientists to look into the Holy Grail, (he was actually obsessed with it ) and Google wasn't around then. Do we discount them all as scientists because they were Nazis?

As for Atlantis Pru, is it really such a myth or if so, why has so much research and exploration been done into it? I'm not professing to know the answer, but I don't just dismiss things just on my own assumptions.
Is that a trick question?
I've pondered my answer at great length. Erm................no!
So hang on, you think the idea that Atlantis is real, is anything other than mental? Is this the same underwater city that Plato made up?
Well, he wrote of it I admit, but where exactly does it state he made it up? Do you mean Patrick Duffy was only acting and it isn't real?
Well it's the first documented occurrence. So in terms of the way history works, he 'made it up'. The lost Atlantis, that was the size of a continent, and which sank, and completely disappeared in something tectonic shift proves to be an impossible time-scale? There's been plenty of research and exploration done into whether psychics are real, or whether the moon landings were faked. Doesn't stop either being a crock of shit a proper scientist would be nowhere near.

Bloody hell!

Sorry, TANGO, I had no intention of inviting salvoes from within the bishopric and elsewhere, although I did hesitate for a moment before pressing the 'submit' button. Silly me.

you've played the frank collin card and are raising me Robert Baird???

Tango - this is science fiction.

Its a bit like all those American "amazing truth behind......" programmes that channel five used to be very fond of. I know you are fond of them - and that's great - but it's not science!

the amazing truth behind the Gospel of Thomas.... noah's ark... the bermuda triangle.... atlantis..... the holy grail.... king arthur..... Dan Brown...

here's how they all work (Robert Baird included)

1. hey - what if "A" was true? not beyond the bounds of possibility
2. if it was - then there are several other things that might be true - one of them, maybe not the most obvious is "C"
3. here's a scientist to prove that "C" sometimes actually does happen (not exactly as it would here - but it is science)
4. if C was true - then you'll all agree that naturally "E" must have happened at some point
5. if E happened - then it's not too big a jump is it (errr... actually, yes, ed.) to suggest that "F" is at least theoretically possible
6. here's a scientist to show us something similar to "F" that he thinks might happen if conditions were right
7. that's two scientists - so this is all genuine
8. now we've proved it all so far - therefore "G" might have occurred - and therefore proves that Michael Barrymore IS genetically related to Moses and Noah's Ark is buried under the swimming pool in Basildon.

that might be entertainment - it might be fun - it might even be interesting - but it's not science, it is bollox.

Have to assume that's me since thebish is such a fount of all wisdom and never wrong. How about you maybe input something of your own to the arguments, you know, just to spice things up a bit. I did state a "don't know" view and doubt if anyone really does, but, I mean, I can get a thousand hits on Google on either The Ark or Atlantis and a million views, on here I'm restricted to two views from a cleric and a student on a football website. Who should I listen too?

Like Insane I've found the thread entertaining but hang on, Bish, King Arthur existed. Not of course all the round table, Holy Grail, Sir Lancelot, Lady of the lake stuff that the French made up six centuries later. But it is highly probable that he existed and beat the Saxons in a few battles. Of course his name wasn't Arthur (it is unknown) and he wasn't a king (since we didn't have them then), but.... Anyway I'm fairly sure Dan Brown exists.

I picked up a book called 'Prime Minister Portillo and Other Things That Never Happened' in Oxfam. It's a series of essays by various politicos on alternative histories - Churchill never becoming PM in 1940, Kennedy surviving the assassin's bullet, and rather more fancifully Labour having 18 years in office from 1974 to 1992 and Portillo becoming PM at the 2001 election. Amusing and occasionally interesting.

I didn't offer an opinion as to whether any of that list existed or not Monty.... you normally read stuff more carefully than that! (don't you?)

I criticised the "mystery behind" series of programmes that Channel 5 used to be so fond of about them....

(as for your king arthur existing... if he wasn't called arthur and he wasn't a king - what is left of king arthur?)
