BTW, am I getting confused, or did he win goal of the season when he was at Southampton about 12 years ago (I seem to remember him running half the length of the field, beating six men then slotting home)?
Sheringham played for England well before his 30's though.

I've no doubt Kev can do a job but to me it doesn't make a lot of sense having a player who's never been in a squad before brought in at 33 when you're really planning for 2 years time. Davies will still be going then I hope and yes his game doesn't rely on pace but realistically what are the chances of him going? Whereas someone younger who perhaps isn't quite "ready" now might be if given the experience in a couple of years.
Why plan for 2 years time?
If we don't win our qualifying games we won't be going the championships anyway.
For me you live for today, pick your best team/squad at your disposal for each match.
Which is one way of looking at it. The other is that unless England start planning for major tournaments properly they're always going to underperform when it comes to the crunch.

Its even better because of the wailing and gnashing of teeth going on over Andy Caroll. Have I missed something, when did Andy Caroll become the next saviour of England?

He scored a hat-trick in a 6-0 win don't you know...

Seriously though, he's not done owt since except for feigning injury so he didn't have to play for the U21's!

Plus, he wasn't good enough last season (division snobbery) so then, why 5 games later (2 off the bench) suddenly make him one of the best english forwards around??

Clue: It doesn't

The Wanderers boss admits he has been impressed with Davies ever since taking the hotseat at the Reebok Stadium earlier this year.

"He's a consummate professional I think he's getting better," he said.

"I think he's now got far more appreciation of football and how it should be played, how he has to make an impact as a striker and a leader.

"He's earned this and I love it when people go and earn things. Every day since I've inherited him he's been a blessing to work with and long may that continue."

You missed out that if only Megson had brought Riga and Elmander on for Davies and Taylor when we went 1-0 up we'd have won the premiership.

But while we're at it, I'd be really interested to hear Sir Nuts analysis of the goal we scored at the weekend. Obviously Davies does NOTHING for Elmander, NOTHING!

I can't believe it.

I'm as happy as he is.

The internet 'he's not good enough' charlie brigade are on various websites, but Davo has a surprising amount of people defending him, even a few WHU fans

The ball bounced luckily off his shin. Fortunately, Elmander is so brilliant, he scored anyway off a shit deflection. Would have been 9-0 if Riga was playing anyway.

Seeing as my post disappeared into the ether I'll post the most salient point again.

Talksport's defamation of Kevin Davies yesterday on Drive and this morning's Breakfast show led me to compare stats with the darling of the English press, one Wayne Rooney. They were saying he is a dirty player and international referees would be more likely to book him as a consequence of his style of play.

In 8 seasons from 2002/03 to 2009/10 our Kevin has conceded 69 Yellows and 1 Red card. Rooney has garnered 80 yellows and four red.

Who's the REAL liability?

Good luck Kev. I hope it's all you've dreamed it to be.

I disagree that this is the wrong selection if England are going to properly prepare a future side to challenge for major championships.

1.) Where exactly have the previous methods got us in the last 40 plus years.

2.) Davies can still be around for the 2012 euros - he will be just 35 then and as his game is more based on strength rather than pace, there is no reason he will be any worse then than he is now.

3.) England do not have whole a lot of outstanding youngsters coming through, particularly big centre forwards. Heskey is 31, Zamora, who seems current flavour of the month is 29, Carlton Cole is almost 27 and not good enough, even Crouch is 29. I am struggling to think of any young ones - Carroll perhaps?

I hope and actually think that once the rest of the squad and management see up close what an asset Davies is he will contend for a starting place in forthcoming squads.

His dad will be fuming.

The less said about his granddad the better.

I miss Nutty on days like these, if SKD was to play the headlines the next day will be 'local loner cried onto his television and electrocuted himself tragedy'.

Doesn't take a genius to see how much this means to Davo, so happy for him. Whilst I can't see him becoming England's new star striker, indeed I've got little confidence that he'll make any significant impact (or have the opportunity to do so), he definitely deserves this as a reward for how much effort he's put into the game.

Hopefully he might just do enough to convince some that he's far better than so often made out to be. If he has the chance to get onto a couple of good deliveries then he could surprise a lot of people. Apart from Hammers fans. They know how deadly he can be.
