It is nonsense. I love his example of "how rough and nasty" the English game is, revolves around a Dutch player who was rough and nasty well before he came here. THIS is why I don't like all the overreaction on mistimed tackles. It gives cocks like this an excuse to spout utter shite like this.

Plenty of "flair" players have "survived" the English league. Plenty carry on surviving it. Its just harder because we don't give every decent player 20 yards of space and refuse to try and stop them.

After the World Cup, they were crying about the need for the English team to have an identity, in the way the Germans and Dutch did, that can be blueprinted all the way down from top flight to grassroots and become a mentality for English football.

I take it reading Samuel's article that he wants it to be about fancy flicks and stepovers? He's in for a shock, because that kind of technical ability doesn't really exist in England. So maybe we could wheel that blueprint out for say the 2040 World Cup?

I like the way how "fancy flicks" and the like have suddenly become the only thing that matters since Spain won the world cup.

What people seem to overlook is that Spain were just a really good side. 7 of their players play for the same team. Therefore they were a well oiled machine.

The key to being a good international side is having a properly bonded and coherent team. Too often we've picked the "best 11" and thrown them onto the pitch together, rather than picking balance.

Its a cliche I know but Englands so called "best player" at the time didn't even play in 66.

Finding a balanced team that can play together is the key, and then England will look technically much better as I still fail to believe that we are that far behind the rest when it comes to technique. Unbalanced yes. But technically inferior? No. Not compared to Italy or Holland and the like.

There is a lot of sad things about English football, but finally giving an opportunity to a player from a small squad who gives his everything every week, and is there because of his form, is hardly something to be crying about.

The whole article smacks of scraping the barrel. It really must be a slow news week, if the best they can find to report on is a 'goals-to-fouls' ratio - whcih frankly is the most irrelevant, tenuous and frankly pointless fooking stat i think i've ever heard in my life.

It's like us doing an article on Martin Samuel's 'Pies-to-shits' ratio.

I've not read the samuel piece yet as I have just eaten breakfast. I'll get around to it in a moment or so. The other side of the coin is a nice piece by David Walsh on the back of yesterday's sunday times, supporting SKD; but then he spoils it at the end by stating he's only got the gig 'cos the rest of the English center forwards are crap.

Martin Samuel hates Bolton. Martin Samuel hates Bolton because of how we sent his team down. I know this because one of my best mates works at the Daily Mail (and he isn't a Nazi, over-reactionary, middle aged woman). And he knows this because he keeps talking to Martin Samuel and hearing him slag Bolton off at every opportunity, and that is always highlighted whenever he mentions us in his piffle.

I'm not going to read the piffle he's written today, because it's not worth the time or effort.

I agree that the article is uncalled for and unnecessarily anti Davies. But, the problem is though that at international level the refs in general don't seem to like aggressive/physical play even when its fair, so Kevin's style could unfortunately get him in trouble, particularly as his reputation does go before him. I'm sure the ref will have "got his number" so to speak. It may be unfair but it wouldn't suprise me if he gets a yellow or two if he plays for more than a few minutes at the end of the game.

An example of English refs allowing too much aggressive/physical play is the recent World Cup final when half the Dutch team should have been sent off.

All that being said I do hope both Kevin and Gary get on the pitch for the second half at least.
