I only remember Sammy Lee and Roy MacFarland from that list.
Colin Todd wasn't such a bad manager, and I s'pose Phil Neal was pretty rubbish, but did at least drag us out of the fourth after one year.
Can't think of any others off the top of my head....

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

See I disagree on Toddy. A great bloke and a very good coach but he didn't quite cut it as a manager.Lord Kangana wrote:I only remember Sammy Lee and Roy MacFarland from that list.

You have to put it into relative terms. He spent 13M trying to keep us in the premiership which at the time relatively speaking was a fortune for a lot of premiership clubs nevermind ourselves to spend in one season and he didn't quite manage to keep us up.
Now he was a bit unlucky I'll give him that, but still, he spent money on players who didn't help us that season.
The 99 points season was fantastic BUT he had a very strong squad for that season with some very good players in it. We should have been able to go back up and stay there really given what he was allowed to add.
Sadly I don't think he had the personality or ability to drag the club up like it needed to be to compete at the top level.

I always liked Todd.. But the season we got relegated, it seemed as though we condeded in the last minute every other week. I was pulling my hair out, thinking "Just go against your principles for once and bloody hang in there!"BWFC_Insane wrote:See I disagree on Toddy. With the exception of Holdsworth (I liked him - But you can't ignore the money he cost us, for very little return in the top flight.) although he was massively important to us, in terms of getting back up!East Lower wrote:I think you can criticise Todd for lots of things, but his transfer dealings were decent. From everything I've seen so far the fourth will be Owen Coyle.
Allardyce is in there though, on merit. Never mind the manner of his departure or his subsequent career.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Also until recently wasn't Holdsworth the all-time top scorer at the Reebok?boltonboris wrote:With the exception of Holdsworth (I liked him - But you can't ignore the money he cost us, for very little return in the top flight.) although he was massively important to us, in terms of getting back up!East Lower wrote:I think you can criticise Todd for lots of things, but his transfer dealings were decent. Jimmy Meadsows & Stan Anderson added to that list. ... & part of George Mullhall. Not sure WHICH part, but he was fanstastic as a temporary manager, shite once appointed.Zulus Thousand of em wrote:Blimey!Little Green Man wrote:And your three worst, in no particular order?Zulus Thousand of em wrote:In my time watching Bolton Wanderers we have had three great managers:

Yes, fair point. Imagine leaving us to take over at the then Champions and getting them to the European Cup Final. His transfer dealings were good in places and awful in others.East Lower wrote:I think you can criticise Todd for lots of things, but his transfer dealings were decent. The 100 goal season remains my favourite since I started going to Burnden
He had an eye for a player on a bargain.
But he also wasted a lot of money when he took us up buying the likes of Elliot and Holdsworth who didn't do the business for us that season for one reason or another.
Ok Elliot got injured so he was a bit unlucky but still at the time a lot of money to spend on a left back.
Fish was an expensive buy who didn't tighten up the back four as we would have liked.
He was good at spotting the bargains especially in Scandanavia but apart from the 99 point season he never really managed to buy a coherent team.

Elliot was playing midfield for Newcastle when we signed him. I've a feeling that if he'd remained fit, Todd would have been able to use him to toughen up the midfield. And in the scheme of things, he then got lucky in a decent signing in Whitlow.

They were but both used in differing ways to how Todd used them.East Lower wrote:They might not have done the business that season, but Elliott and Holdsworth were excellent for us under Sam.
Elliot played till what, November? As a left back for Todd, and Holdsworth partnered Blake.
But Holdsworth only coped once Allardyce used him as a target man, focal point.

So you agree, they were good signings.BWFC_Insane wrote:They were but both used in differing ways to how Todd used them.East Lower wrote:They might not have done the business that season, but Elliott and Holdsworth were excellent for us under Sam.
