Korean press has already jumped on the bandwagon. Expected value for Lee was about 8 mil when teams were sniffing about at season's start they say and claim that Bolton may well sell him and Elmo.Worthy4England wrote:I think they'll try and cash in on one of our better players - Cahill, Lee etc, and sell some fringe players where required...RobbieSavagesLeg wrote:Honestly don't think Elmo will go anywhere for the following reasons; He's having a love affair with Coyle in terms of management. He's fitting right in with the team, seems popular and playing well, why would he want to go? The club won't be happy losing money on him. And who the fink is interested in him anyroad?
We may lose Cahill, which is a bit of a bugger but we'll live.
I'm a little concerned about Al-Habsi, but think he'll stay.
We'll more likely sell some of the fringe players.
But think we'll attract a bit of talent too now OC has shown we can play well (a la Petrov).
But if other clubs see it as a bit of a fire sale then they will bid lowin the hope of getting a bargain. Lee is worth a lot more than 8 mil but I can see Elmo going for 3 mil in January if he wont sign a new contract.midnitefooty wrote:Korean press has already jumped on the bandwagon. Depression is just a state of mind, supporting Bolton is also a state of mind hence supporting Bolton must be depressing QED

Exactly. I try not to look through white coloured spectacles (I'm not Timmy Mallet you know) when I watch individual players. I do rate Cahill and think he was a good signing but if the right offer came in I don't think it'd be disasterous to see him go. I even recall Zat Knight saying pretty much the same last season.thebish wrote:TANGODANCER wrote:Really?coffeymagic wrote:I wouldn't mind cashing in on Cahill. I reckon so - yeah - he IS a very good premiership player - but not a world-class centre-back as some claim he already is - maybe he will be one day - but he isn't yet. I think Coffey has in mind the more extreme over-assessments of his talents.
Zat's Right!

I thought Gartsides words were - we are a trading club, not a selling club.FaninOz wrote:midnitefooty wrote:.Worthy4England wrote: I think they'll try and cash in on one of our better players - Cahill, Lee etc, and sell some fringe players where required...
I take that to mean that we deliberately aim to buy good but unproven players - improve them - and then sell them at a profit.
Cahill
Muamba
Lee
Holden
Mavies
All fit that profile.
So its a matter of time before we cash in
What goes around may still come around

Apart from GC from the list above Lee's must have caught the eye with his World Cup goals and his performances here. I think he's one of those players who'd be better in a better team if you know what I mean. Holden - I think he's the sort of player United would buy. Muamba's a different player since knob head left. Mavies? Maybe he'll look to move rather than someone coming in for him but yes I can see why most teams would at least keep an eye on all of the above.bw@bw wrote:FaninOz wrote:I thought Gartsides words were - we are a trading club, not a selling club.midnitefooty wrote:.Worthy4England wrote: I think they'll try and cash in on one of our better players - Cahill, Lee etc, and sell some fringe players where required...

Except that there's a £15, release fee and that rose, I understand, to £17m if he was an England capped player.East Lower wrote:Exactly. So if there is any demand for this player who has a 3 year contract remaining then we shouls start any auction at "17m.
Ridiculous money ? Of course it is, but when you hear some fees being spoken of about way lower class players it isn't.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

Indeed - and we may profit from some that we already have (though - probably lose on Elmo). Here's the thing - Coyle has proven very good at motivating formerly demotivated unpolished, good young'uns for the future - but has he got an eye for their purchase when it comes to replacing the ones we might cash in?

Anyway, I think Gartside has been dead canny here.
No player is going to be knocking on his door come January asking for a stupid contract. The ones on their arses just seeing out their contracts or out on loan might just realise there are no big pay days left and start looking for a new club sharpish. It might start a bidding war for Cahill by alerting people to our willingness to sell (who knows, maybe nobody, or only one club are interested at the mo).
I think it puts pressure on Elmander to make his mind up and either sign the lesser contract, or start looking for a new club. And lets be clear here, in the current climate there is no way on earth any club will pay a transfer fee for him in January when he's available for nowt in July. If his only option is Turkey, maybe he doesn't want to go there, and it does his cause no good that we aren't prepared to pay him even the same amount. We're even willing to lose him rather than pay him.
As I say, quite canny.

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.

The man who brought us Holden on a free and Jack Wilshere on loan as his first business?thebish wrote:bw@bw wrote:FaninOz wrote:I thought Gartsides words were - we are a trading club, not a selling club.midnitefooty wrote:.Worthy4England wrote: I think they'll try and cash in on one of our better players - Cahill, Lee etc, and sell some fringe players where required...

ahh - yes! good point - I'd forgotten about Holden... (no excuses for that! duh!)
(not sure we can count Wilshere in the buying-unpolished-players-to-sell bracket though)

Or alternatively he's just alerted the world to the fact that we need to bring in some cash and therefore we'll see low bids for the likes of Cahill and Lee etc?Lord Kangana wrote:Anyway, I think Gartside has been dead canny here.

I do suspect Coyle has already made the decision to sell off Cahill - and the england stuff all helpedBWFC_Insane wrote:You know I think Gartside is a good Chairman but I'm not sure those were the best comments he could make on this particular occassion. I think he has made a calculation that involves several variables...
1. the sheer amount of dosh his sale COULD reap in the right circumstances
2. the fact that even with the world's greatest ever CB we are not keeping clean sheets
3. the fact that Ricketts and Knight made a darned good partnership when Cahill was out with his bloodclot
4. the chance that SOME of the Cahill money might be available for him to make the team more his own (ie. buying a couple of Burnley CBs

I don't think Coyle wants to offload Elmo - I may be wrong - but I think Coyle has put a lot of effort into Elmo and is seeing the rewards..
I just don't know about Lee... and i'd be surprised if he decided to cash in on Muamba just now - I doubt we'd get any more than the 5mill we shelled out - UNLESS - when Sean D reappears, the midfield is reshaped...
I think Cahill is the cash-cow - and I don't think any of us should be that surprised, annoyed or depressed if we milk him (her?) for all he (she?) is worth...

Agree Bish I imagine when Coyle came in he knew Cahill was going to be sold at some point and was probably told that when that happened would be his chance to re-shape the squad. So far he's only been able to flitter round the edges.thebish wrote:I do suspect Coyle has already made the decision to sell off Cahill - and the england stuff all helpedBWFC_Insane wrote:You know I think Gartside is a good Chairman but I'm not sure those were the best comments he could make on this particular occassion. Agree with both bish & BWFCI on this. Cahill getting that England cap has bumped the clause up to £17.5m apparently and there aren't many teams who can turn that sort of money down, certainly not Bolton Wanderers. As for selling Elmo, I'm very surprised that there's talk of him going. Sure he's one of the highest paid players and they want to reduce the wage bill, but getting rid of him for £2-£4m makes no sense in my eyes. Unless he's got big plans for Rodrigo? I for one would LOVE to see him play up front.BWFC_Insane wrote:Agree Bish I imagine when Coyle came in he knew Cahill was going to be sold at some point and was probably told that when that happened would be his chance to re-shape the squad. I think with the amount of teams rumoured interested in him (Utd, Arsenal, Spurs, Liverpool, Inter), I am pretty confident that valuation will be matched.CrazyHorse wrote:![]()

a good question - and one I asked sirNut a good while ago when he announced that we would sell Cahill for £25million...
stranger things have happened, though - and I reckon we should not be that surprised, annoyed or distressed if we cash in on him now - my guess would be a lot closer to 8-10 million than 15 or 17.5
