I liked how the alienated kid found this father figure in the most unlikeliest of guises, and I liked the cynical nature of Walt. His estrangement from his family was a sad storyline, and one I suspect is more common than I'd like to think. I also liked the relationship between Walt and the vicar. The ending was poignant too, when you realise what he has done and why....not to mention the brutal attack on Sue - I thought the whole film was was excellent, the whole requiem tone was apt.William the White wrote:Not being provocative at all. I'm afraid to say I just didn't like Gran Torino very much. Like Mystic River I thought the premise was great but the script just didn't deliver. Didn't think the relationship between Eastwood's character and the boy-next-door was truly worked for, and never really believed it. I thought the gang of no-goods were just lifted out of a stock cupboard and the Eastwood family thinly drawn.
Not anywhere near superb IMHO...
Why did you guys like it so much?
I also find the Hmong to be quite an interesting lot too, so some further insight into their practices was appreciated.
I only read the Metro though, so I could be wrong.

Yeah - I just didn't find myself believing in the growing relationship between Walt and the boy next door - good idea, unearned. Untouched by the 'sad storyline' on the family, though, again, the idea was good. I agree on Walt and the priest - that worked well, a nice sub plot that delivered. The brutal attack on Su was shocking because of its brutality but pretty gratuitous. Our different takes on the climax shows that one person's poignancy is another's sentimentality.East Lower wrote:I liked how the alienated kid found this father figure in the most unlikeliest of guises, and I liked the cynical nature of Walt. Glad you enjoyed it. Sorry I didn't.
What's the Metro like - I've never read it?

Midsomer Murders (one I hadn't seen before), followed by Everton v Arsenal (Everton alsmost came back from the dead again with another late goal) and now Chelsea v Sunderland which has just started.
Depression is just a state of mind, supporting Bolton is also a state of mind hence supporting Bolton must be depressing QED

Watched the Doris wi a Dragon Tattoo at the weekend after finally finishing the book.
I thought it was pretty rubbish tbf, and doesn’t justify the book at all. I was keen to put places and faces to the names id been reading about but the story is just rushed and lots of the twists and build up have vanished, completely removing all the suspense. Vanger had supposed to have been studying Harriet’s disappearance for 40 years, Blomkvist turns up, looks at one photo, bosh – case solved! Also didn’t like the girl who plays Lisbeth much either, seems to have been cast on appearance rather than ability!? and the killer when discovered is about as scary as a Care Bear! Blah, big disappointment.

I really got into the Harriet case, but it totally bored me with the libel revenge stuff at the end, couldnt wait to finish it. The film also lacked the gratuitous violence i was hoping for too.East Lower wrote:Davey Fincher is doing a version that should be out soon - though I thought the books and the accompanying film to be a bit tripe.
Have got the 2nd to go at, but not sure if i can be arsed.
Yeah the English version has Daniel Craig playing Blomkvist, will probably check it out - when its on sky!
