Dear Elmo,

Please sign a new one year extension. All of us at The Wanderer have well stuck up for you even when other sites doubted your skill. Not us, no sir. All of us on here thought you would be this awesome, so please sign again.

Thanks
Pfffft.

Is tomorrow d-day, as the papers would have us believe, or is it stage 1...

When can he sign pre-contracts (with other teams)? Jan?

He can sign pre-contracts with other clubs when there is only 6 months left on his current contract AFAIK.

I don't know what Elmander's mindset is or what he wants, but the one year deal doesn't sound that great.

Time to stop pissing about and get him signed I think. We'll see what happens tommorow.

Got to hope something is worked out. This must be very tricky for all concerned.Elmo has to choose between continuing at a club were he is now able to shine or moving on to a club with more money. As he's getting to around 30 it would be understandable if he did the latter for the possibility of cash ,trophies and European football.Course he could then dip to what he's previously been for us or not get on with the manager but financially he'd already be set.
His agent will want us to match whatever he can get elsewhere which given his recent form may be more than we can afford.A 2 year deal at his current pay rate with goals /success related add ons may keep him here.I doubt that a one year deal will.
From our perspective we can't afford to overcommit money or lose an asset on a free.
He has been given a hard time from the previous manager and some fans got on his back so we can hardly bleat about loyalty, even in the bleak times he still seemed to put a lot of effort in.I'm sure he's big enough to forget that and it will come down to what's on offer at the end of the day.

What Nixon is saying is pretty much what you'd expect to happen.

Gartside has offered a new contract to Elmander via his agent and his agent has not "turned it down" nor signed it.

His agent will be instructing Elmander to see what his options are. And this is only right. If a huge club came in and doubled his salary its only natural his head would be turned. Stoke can probably pay him loads as could Liverpool potentially.

It depends whats in his head, perhaps he wants 3 years on full terms, or perhaps he's looking for one big move so he can move back to Sweden and live in a log cabin with his family.

Who knows. But I can't really blame him. Its just going to be one of those things if we lose the top scorer in the league on a free or for a pittance! Que sera sera.

surely he's already earned more than enough to afford a log cabin in sweden and a happy retirement...

If he chooses to move on for another pay day rather than stick with the most promising side we've had in years then that says a lot about him, especially after the two years of mediocrity that we've put up with.

Let's hope it's just round one of negotiations. I'd rather keep him and let him fire us to Europe rather than take a paltry £3m, Ben-Haim style.

Probably but we don't know his personal circumstances. I guess it depends if he wants to work after football aswell.

And what he wants to leave for his kids.

All are factors.

He might have gambling debts from his younger days.

I think Eidur has quite substantial debts. Depends how you've lived.

From a footballing point of view I think he'd be best off staying here.

But you know you can't blame him if financially for his life he thinks he needs that last move. You really can't.

He owes us nothing end of the day. Had he not played better this season he'd not be getting a new contract, its not like we're standing by him particularly if we we're we'd have offered him a 3 year deal last season and I'm sure he'd have taken it then.

He was getting abuse from the crowd during the pre-season game at Rochdale so I don't get this whole "he owes us" attitude. It would be nice if he fancied staying on but ultimately this is one of those shit situations that occurs in football.

15 good games vs 70 odd mediocre/shit ones - I think some of the more extreme reactions seen elsewhere on the internet are unwarranted. He's a fine player, but there are other fine players out there.

Yeah, round 1 to the agent there. A one-year extension is miserly and at Elmo's age he's gonna be looking for his last big pay cheque, and a 1 year cheque isn't gonna cut it.

I'm not letting the other clubs' identities worry me, I think again that's pure agent talk. The Moscow and Turkish club he was linked with would be tougher with Champs League opportunities.

Main worry now is his form. I don't want all this shit to turn his head right when he's at his peak.

There are. But we spent £9m of our hard-earned on this one. I'd rather that got paid back somewhat by a season or more decent performances

all well and good in theory... but how many of them are now accessible to us financially?

Just goes to show how daft it was to give him only a three year deal when perceived wisdom is that it takes foreigners at least a year to find their feet in a new league.

No I understand that but currently the previous rubbish games do not affect his value so much as they current top quality ones.

So his market value in terms of what he can earn has rocketed (striker scoring goals in premiership will always do that) its just unfortuneate timing.

We'll struggle to replace what he's giving to the side currently but equally we can't give him a silly salary for 4 years and risk him going backwards in form terms.

Difficult balance really, but I trust Coyle and Gartside to get it right whichever way it turns out.
