Watched ep 1 of The Nativity... holding fire atm...
Re: What are you watching tonight?
I watched Accused, last night. The only one of the series I've seen, but having watched it, I'm glad I missed the rest. Another turgid bag 0' shite from McGovern.

Re: What are you watching tonight?
All a bit "ground-breaking" for modern times isn't it really? Tax raises, government pressure, rumblings amongst the poor, full hotels at Christmas time, no room at the hospitals and poor transport. Hope they don't find the flight into Egypt's been cancelled due to bad weather.thebish wrote:don't worry - I'm sure Mr Garrow will come up with a ground-breaking legal attack on the Roman Census before long...William the White wrote:Watched ep 1 of The Nativity... holding fire atm...

No the other things, too cold at night for shepherds to be out, something to do with the star alignment and other bits and pieces, think they reckon it was in March or May.
Now Mithras was born on the 25th of Dec so its really his birthday

Re: What are you watching tonight?
Without any religious overtones, it's pretty much generally accepted historically that the date, even the year of the birth of Jesus is pretty flexible as is the year of his death. December 25th is a designated date and the one that's been celebrated based around the Gregorian calender using his birth as a rough calender start point. Truth is, no one really knows for sure so we use the generally accepted feast day, December 25th, as the day for celebrating his birth.Raven wrote:No the other things, too cold at night for shepherds to be out, something to do with the star alignment and other bits and pieces, think they reckon it was in March or May. What you mean to say TD of course is that Christians stole the date of a Pagan midwinter festival?TANGODANCER wrote:Without any religious overtones, it's pretty much generally accepted historically that the date, even the year of the birth of Jesus is pretty flexible as is the year of his death. ahhh - you don't mean it was impossible for jesus to be born at this time of year - you're saying that the details of the story don't add up...
nobody knows when jesus was born - it wasn't considered that important - celebrating his birth is a relatively modern idea...
25th december was chosen for many reasons - loads of figures allegedly had their birthday celebrated on that day - and in each case 25th dec. was also an arbitrary date!!
the roman god "Attis", the Greek god "Dionysus", the egyptian god "Osiris", the Persian God "Mithra" - and tyhe Babylonian Sun God festival among them..
you can celebrate them all! more than one person/god is allowed to have a birthday on the same day!
Mithra was born out of a block of stone... I'm not sure what more evidence for this happening on 25th december there is than thedre is for the birth of Jesus (which was probably in warmer months!)

nor am I sure how you'd go about celebrating it.. what do you propose??

indeed they did. and the pagans stole the date from all those who had gone before!BWFC_Insane wrote:

Not at all. Dates are but time, and no one own time. We just share it.BWFC_Insane wrote: What you mean to say TD of course is that Christians stole the date of a Pagan midwinter festival?

Isn't Jesus dead? And therefore won't have a penny spent on him.
Or have I missed the joke?

You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Well......the latest Dr Who box-set is about £60 a time, and he has a lot of followers. Entrance to church is free and a couple of quid on the collection plate.thebish wrote:ooh, I doubt it!TANGODANCER wrote:He'll probably get more money spent on him at Christmas than Jesus.ratbert wrote:Doctor Who owns time, doesn't he?

That's classed as religion and we're keeping the thread light-hearted.Lord Kangana wrote:Isn't Jesus dead? And therefore won't have a penny spent on him.
