I wouldn't want SWP - like Bilbo said he's been out of form and lacks composure. He hasn't impressed me.

I think people get caught up in the possibility of us signing a 'name' player, regardless of if they are actually any good.

I suppose it's up to Coyle to see if he thinks he can really work with him, but he's got a lot to prove. He'd never be ahead of Lee in my team though.

I think Tom has hit the nail on the head in regards to "the name".

Wonder if its worth dredging up some of the comments re SWP when he was picked for the England squad eh?

To me he's a name and nowt much more. I don't think he's an improvement over what we have in that position.

As for the 90k a week, Santa Cruz was on that so it wouldn't surprise me if SWP was on it. Even half of that is a fortune. And lets face it we'll do well to bring two players in this window. I'd rather it was a centre half and central midfield player than owt else.

I don't want SWP, our current ball boys do a sufficient enough job

If he wasn't so one footed I'd be up for him I think. As it is I'm not sure.

Maybe the idea is him with CYL on the right and Rodrigo as a forward.....so using him to solve another problem (lack of a pacy forward)

All's I can say about SWP, is that he's never scored a goal he meant. Find me one o'You Tube-ers that hasn't come off a deflection, his shin or back of his head

Many players have made a "name" for themselves by being good. It would be foolish to dismiss "name" players for that very reason.

Which doesn't really apply to English players, as having a slash in a stylish manner gives them legendary status these days. And SWP doesn't suite our game, nor Citehs, because he's better running from deep on to a through ball behind the oppo's back four. We don't play like that.

Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

Yeah, I mean what the feck were we thinking of signing the woefully out-of-form Kevin Davies?

At the time we were focused on Value for Money.
SKD was a free transfer - he had no other decent options, having not set the world on fire even on loan, so he would have been cheap, at first.
SWP will not be cheap - not even on loan.

Maybe SWP bid means we have had a good offer for CYL?
Can't see why we would want them both.

I would rather have CYL

You've missed the point. SWP hasn't simply morphed into a poor player overnight, and OC's aproach is possibly what's required to bring the best back out of him in much the same way that Allardyce turned SKD's career around, and in the same way that he's effected Elmander's performances.

My point is that I agree ... he hasn't suddeenly morphed into a poor player overnight.

I'm not sure he's ever been THAT good .... & whatever he did have slipped some long time ago & over a sustained period, certainly not overnight !!
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

I can see your point BR but it's quite a while since he was playing blinders every week for city and that was really one exceptional season when he stood out in a poor team. He's done very little since the season before chelsea signed him. Pace, some trickery, no final ball. If he was motivated and willing to drop his wages it would be worth a pop but it seems unlikely to me.On recent form he's no better than what we have and we don't need another expensive impact sub

I don't really understand this...
The City board reportedly want his wages to be paid in full by any club taking the winger on loan, but may eventually compromise as the player favours a move to the Reebok instead of rival bidders Fulham.
why would the citeh board compromise over their wish to have wages paid in full because SWP favours bolton over fulham??? how does that work??

i can understand them compromising because nobody who is interested can afford the wages - and they'd ultimately rather pay half-wages for a non-playing player than full-wages - but what difference does it make to them that he favours bolton over fulham - what has that got to do with anything?

I would like to know what the point is then.

SKD was not a poor player - but he was badly used - esp by Strachan and completely drained of confidence - and Allardyce found a different way to use his abilities that suited the game he wanted us to play. And - with the negligible outlay it was a reasonable gamble

SWP is not a poor player either - but it's not obvious that his game suits us any better than CYL. I have lost track of the posts on here about wingers needing to do a share of the defending in our system (CYL, Taylor, Petrov being the most recent) - otherwise we get over-run.

I just don't see that he is the player we need.

And I don't see that he is the best use for our (very limited) funds

I think if Kevin Davies was on 60k a week and was going to cost a hefty loan fee, Big Sam wouldn't have bothered in that case either.

Even if he does prefer us to Fulham, I don't see it being something he's going to really rock the boat over.

I know what Bruce R is trying to say.

But I don't think a Kevin Davies on his arse in terms of his footballing career, left out of a Southampton FA Cup final squad, banished, and down on his luck, being out of contract and overweight coming on trial, showing he had the hunger and desire to graft and basically rebuild his career is comparable to SWP. He is on say 60K plus a week knowing he doesn't have to probably ever work again, and knowing that he will be very unlikely to NEED to impress here to maintain his career as his reputation is sufficient enough currently, and if not there is always City reserves.

Just my opinion. And I think SWP is one of those players who burst onto the scene and was exciting, bags of pace, ran at people, needed to find better end product. Sadly that "end product" never really materialised.

Lets get this straight he'd be a welcome extra body but I think when you consider he could well cost with a loan fee and wages near 2M quid that don't look so cheap for a few months.

And Bish, if SWP refuses to go to Fulham then City might compromise on half wages to save at least that rather than keep his whole lot on the books!
