ahhhh!! now I understand! but - then the significant moments in WW1 and WW2 were not generally played out in silence - but the remembrance day silence is quite quiet...

I'm not THAT fussed either way - but I generally prefer a silence because a whole minute of cheering and clapping and whoopin' and a hollerin' just doesn't feel very british! of it were 10 seconds of applause - maybe! ;-)

If a guy is worthy of true respect, as Nat is, then the crowd should remain silent. Whereas I agree to having a minutes applause for the likes of George Best, let's clap at George Best for how good he was at kicking a ball about, and let's hide the boos, my boos incuded, for what an absolute c*nt of a human being he was. Clap tossers like Geroge Best, differentiate his type from the likes of Nat Lofthouse!

If it's to be the applause, why not bang the drums. My personal preference is definitely the dignity of the silence but as others have said, the important thing is what the family want. Another problem for me with the applause though is that half way through I'm distracted by thinking how my arms are beginning to ache rather than focussing on celebrating existence/achievements.

A moments silence should definitely be brought back.

Really don't like the "moments clapping"... :-(

Pound to a penny it's There's Only One Nat Lofthouse.

Although his name can be adapted to a few different themes, such as "Someone Scored A Goal, Nat Lofthouse".

It'd be nice to get some variety, but we've been saying that for 15 Reebok years.

Maybe we can adapt the Elmander song accordingly.

Oh and by the way, I bloody hate Chelsea and everything those tossbags stand for, so in Nat's name I hope we smash them

Clap clap, clap clap clap, clap clap clap clap, Lofty?
In a world that has decided
That it's going to lose its mind
Be more kind, my friends, try to be more kind.

With the drums coming in after thity seconds, completely off beat, monotone and slow? Could be a winner.
You can judge the whole world on the sparkle that you think it lacks.
Yes, you can stare into the abyss, but it's staring right back.

A song from his heyday would be a moving tribute.

Silence and bowed heads, then a feckin big cheer, then a round of applause.

Chanting for him throughout the match would have been something he would hopefully have wanted. Silence before the game should be observed. I really hope that Chelsea observe it too, they would want the same respect if it were one of their own

I remember us having a minutes silence on the anniversary of Mathew Harding's death and Chelsea stating their appreciation. Don't think there'll be any issues there.

Being a no-fuss, modest sort of chap, I'll take a stab that if Nat were asked what would be Monday's finest ribute to his memory, he'd probably say " Beat Chelsea, then raise a glass for me and that'll do nicely thanks".
