Hello
Newbie in peace
First match ..... can't remember, but around 1954 I'd guess - taken by dad of course. I wasn't too impressed by the match and spent the time trying to get away and run around the terrace. dad used to play in a local team (goalie) and if he took me I could spend more useful time exploring ditches and woodlands surrounding the ground.
The first match I actually remember was the 1958 cup final - watched on a relative's TV 'coz we were too poor to afford our own (all together now ... awwwwww)
I have lived in Essex and Kent since 1970 so my visits to Burnden were pretty much restricted to when I visited my parents and since their deaths I haven't been back
I DO try to get to the more local "away" fixtures, but work takes up a lot of my time (but retirement isn't far away!)
This looks to be a nice website and I hope to be a productive member of it

Are you anything to do with Essex Whites?
There's a lad that brings a flag from that lot each away game, and spend the entire game stood at the back wearing shorts and bending everyone's ear about how great the EDL are. I can't stand him.

I only found out about the 'Matthews Final' of 1953 when my dad came home from work. By the time the '58 victory came about I was living 'down' here and I can't honestly remember when I found out we'd won. That's the price of separation, I guess. Anyway, I'm glad you found this site as, overall at least, the mob you'll find here are a pretty decent bunch.
Cheers

Re: Hello
In the mid 70's whenever the game was rubbish, my mate and I used to have this game whereby we'd count how many people we could see sparking up in the facing Manny Road.Reebok Rules wrote:I wasn't too impressed by the match and spent the time trying to get away and run around the terrace.

Erm ...... no!
However, it's possible I have met him.
In one of those spooky co-incidences a few years ago.
An office outing to a Romford bowling alley - I wore my Bolton top. In an area saturated with Whammers and Arses (can I say that?) in the very next lane to me was someone wearing a Bolton top!
There are quite a few exiled southerners though (it USED to be where the work was, but now we are as impoverished as the rest of the country!)
