Smoked trout and leek risotto and a bottle of that there Dao (Asda, fiver). Stood in for a chilled white pretty well.

El Rincon this (late) afternoon... With the middle daughter, up from London abode on family business - one funeral, one birthday (there's something nice, appropriate somehow, about that balance)...

Years ago we decided that wherever life took us we would meet up once a year for a meal with just the two of us... So far we've managed it in Bolton, Manchester, London, Prague and Lancaster...

Between the two of us, in my fave NW tapas cellar, we managed: Patatas Bravas, sardines, boquerones in vinegar, lamb and potatoes, fillet steak in garlic and paprika, chicken croquetes, asparagus with olive oil and garlic, prawns with salsa and manchego cheese... A small san miguel beer each and a glass of house white...

Just great... only wish I'd had room for more - all those things on the menu I wanted to eat and will have to wait... The girl is going to Seville in april - the world capital of tapas... i have a hunch she'll enjoy...

Seville oranges - much too bitter to eat - are now available in supermarkets and Bolton market... Until about mid-February usually... So now our kitchen reeks sweetly of the home made marmalade that will see us through a year of breakfasts (and several friends will be getting a jar). The juice has gone in the freezer for Seville almond cake - just the best dessert ever invented.

I've just had a warm spoonful of this year's concoction... absolutely delicious, sticky, sweet and sour, and a very distant cousin of the stuff masquerading as marmalade on Morrison's shelves...

Scuzin' mi ignorance if you will, Zulu, is Basque cuisine generally different to your more readilly available Spanish nosebag then, or does San Sebastian have more by way of excellent eateries? Or, of course, both?

I've eaten some really lovely meals in some of the smaller restaurants in various places in Spain, and some truly awful ones in some of the bigger places. My wife still talks about a meal of fillet steak in mushroom sauce in a sea-front restaurant in Benalmadena, as one of the nicest meals she ever had. In a large hotel in Benidorm I paid a good few bob for a special slap-up Christmas dinner that was truly horrendous. Lesson...don't go where the tourists flock, find where the locals eat. Right now my minds doing Gazpacho soup, Tortilla Espanola , patatas bravas, grilled swordfish with the trimmings and you can keep the sweet.

Basque food. Quite good.

Try Ossau Iraty cheese and some Irouleguy.

I also think Navarra and Rioja Baja are Basque. I think.

And it would be wise to refer to these as neither French or Spanish produce, as they'll probably shoot you, despite the present ceasefire.
