Things to do in York
Am taking the wife for an anniversary weekend away, the lucky girl, and we're off to historic York.
Have booked us a hotel and somewhere to eat (the 'Go Down' restaurant), but am struggling to fill in the gaps with things to do. She's 7 months pregnant you see and therefore her boozing and long-walking days are over (for now).
So, short of going to the cinema (which we could do at home) or going to the pub (where she can watch me get slaughtered) I happened to wonder, what else is there to do in York?
Help please

Visit York Minster and the Jorvik (Viking) Centre. Both are pay jobs but you shouldn't miss them if possible. York is a lovely place to just stroll around if the weather's good. Had a relation there and have been many times. Love it.

Worked near York for a while, nice place, used to entertain visiting colleagues there sometimes aswell!
Trip down the river on a boat should be good if the weathers nice.
Avoid Jorvik at all costs IMO, rip off. Visit to the shambles is a must.
And of course there is Betty's for a spot of afternoon tea or morning coffee! Just be prepared to queue (its worth it).
As for restaurants Meltons is amazing as is the Blue Bicycle (I know you booked a place and I know where it is but never went there myself).

Wetherby or York races if there's a meeting on, and if you like horse racing......
Recently took the missus to York and we went hot air ballooning.......weird experience but worth trying once.

Sorry initially missed that part that your wife is 7 months pregnant (didn't get much sleep last night)......probably best leaving the ballooning!!!

You can go trainspotting and regale fellow spotters with the "one space or two" argument.

ironic you go to old York as HRG heads to New York!
you wanna take her there for your anniversary!
York races is a good shout, one of the less formal meets but not full of rough arses like Haydock.

York pass worth it because you can just drift in and out of the attractions. Jorvik a definite, minster is really nice, Train museum good, shops good (some good baby shops), castle museum good
But in all honesty last time we went we just sat in the pub all afternoon a mile out of town playing pub games and drinking fruit beer

If you like proper beer York Brewery tours are good. The guide is difficult to understand but seems to know his stuff! The wag can watch whilst you get pissed afterwards. The beer is quality. Walking the walls you can do in parts for less strenuous exercise and its better than shopping.

There's a big, oddments open market at the weekends where you can browse. The Minster is spectacular from outside as well as within. Plus the whole area around it with small winding streets & plenty of curio shops. Quite a few 2nd hand book shops too if they interest you.
The Railway Museum and the Castle Museum are v good if you're into them at all & the lady's legs can manage it.
Some nice tea & coffee houses, Betty's, as said above, is amazing & worth the queue's.
Just a nice place to be .... & you can buy Bobo Jnr. #2 a pint with all that drinking money you're saving on the Mrs. He's at Uni there.

Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.

York minster proves to this atheist that humanity can producing stunning things in pursuit of God... though Moslem mosque architecture is even more stunning... Take her to Cordoba next time... food's better as well...

I HATE churches. I mean as 'go see this church things'. Even so, York Minster is shit hot. Jorvik, meh, good if you're fifteen, which I was, probs hate it now. If the weather is nice just do a wander. Very pretty city.

i'd give Jorvik a miss too... very expensive to sit in a fake desk and get trundled round a load of stinky (and fairly yawny) history about York before being ejected into a gift shop.... no thanks!Prufrock wrote:I HATE churches. Thing is York is really nice as a place its a shame to be shunted round the Jorvik when there are so many other things to do.
Top of my list when I'm back there is always Betty's for a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. You really cannot beat it!
