...........after a full stop?

I'm a 'one' man myself, and when proof-reading other colleague's work I continually change their habit of using two spaces (

) and putting just the one in, as I was taught at school, college and university (former poly

).

I would like to think everyone else agreed with me, and this office spazwit is completely wrong and therefore I will be justified in feeling superior to him in every conceivable way.

I understand two spaces were used on typewriters to provide a clear break between the end and start of a sentence, and it seems to have carried on and is now also used on computers etc, however I think both versions are widely regarded as being correct.

It depends what kind of a font you are using. If I was using courier, then I would probably put two spaces after a full-stop. That's why typists did it - their fonts were fixed-width (mono-spaced).

The purpose of any type-setting is surely readability. If your font has no decent space after a full-stop, then it makes sense to use 2 spaces to separate the sentences. If your font is nicely kerned, then you can use 1. The first desire of an author is surely that his/her work be readable? 2-spaces or 1-space - it depends on how big the spaces are in comparison to the letters - and that differs from font to font...
