Currently watching Ghost (just broke off for a brew and a bowl of cornflakes - I think you'll find that that's 'supper', posh folk).
Have to say that I've never seen a film that's followed the book as closely. The whole thing, including the characters, looks exactly as I'd imagined it to when doing the book.

Owen Coyle would say "It's to a terrific standard".

I watched Paul on Wednesday night.

Well worth it, especially if you're a nerd like me (or Simon Pegg) - seems to have received criticism cos it's not up to the same comic standard as Shaun of the Dead or Hot Fuzz, but you will be disappointed if you go in thinking of it as the third in a trilogy.

Think of it as a sci-fi extra-terrestrial movie with comedy bits, or even a sci-fi parody, and it makes sense.

Colonel Redl. German. Subtitles. Second collaboration between the director and leading actor of Mephisto. That was brilliant. This isn't - but a comfortable 3 stars, i reckon.

Just watched Frost / Nixon. Absolutely superb - compelling viewing.

I know that the guts of the interview scenes are factually based, but did that phone call actually take place? And is that an actual reflection of what actually occurred during the build-up to the final confrontation?

A quiet Friday evening, I foolishly re-watched "Diamonds are Forever". I'd totally forgotten what a really awful film this was. The acting was terrible and I think they must have got the idea for "Little Britain" from the two main villains. It was so bad it just had to get better.......it didn't. Ian Fleming had a droll humour with characters like Plenty O'Toole and Pussy Galore in his novels, but I'm sure he never meant them to be on a par with the Marx Brothers, but far less funny. If I had the DVD it would be a candidate for the re-cycling bin.

It did look quite good but I was struggling with the accents. Harder to decipher than an episode of the Sopranos.

Apparently the phone conversation never took place, and Tricky Dicky had all along planned to "reveal" some of his secrets, so as gain some sympathy from the American people. Lets be clear here, Nixon was out of Frost's league when it came to being a shrewd political operator, despite the tone of the film.

I still like the film, but it used a certain amount of artistic license, as one would expect.

As well, the interviews were a joint venture between the two of them - Frost was looking to burnish his reputation as a serious interviewer but had he pushed Nixon too hard he would have pulled out and Frost wouldn't have anything to sell the networks.

I still like the film, but it used a certain amount of artistic license, as one would expect.

And as such is probably best enjoyed in a state of ignorance, as was mine. It was only when I watched the 'making of' bit on the dvd in which they made a point about including all the key comments from the original interview which made me question the authenticity of the rest of it and you, Sir, have answered my questions. Seen lots of films and that over the weekend.

Thursday night we watched the remake of The Manchurian Candidate. I watched it at the cinema and I think young me thought it was OK. Woman hadn't seen it so we watched it on the lovefilm player. The problem with sci-fi new age technology films is they look dated so, so quickly. It is really badly written too. The whole Manchurian company being introduced halfway through just gave away the entire plot right there and then. As hints go, in a film called 'The Manchurian Candidate', where there is clearly some dodgy political play going on, it isn't particularly subtle.


Also, the ending, [spoiler]why the fook does he shoot Raymond whatsit?! The new President is saved, so surely its fine. Not only that, Raymond seems fine with it, as do the FBI who for some reason let it happen. Did I miss a bit? [/spoiler]

Fri night we went to see Paul. We both really enjoyed it. I think the more comic booky nerdy types would love it, it felt like a lot sailed waaay over my head, but was still good fun, and I can't help but smile whenever Nick Frost is involved with something. Not amazing, probably less good than SotD and Hot Fuzz, but still worth a watch.

Saturday day watched 'Un Prophete'. Fooook people didn't think to point out how it's the longest film in the world! I thought it was ace though. Like Mesrine, very unfrench, in that stuff actually happened, but it still felt like French cinema. The character writing was excellent. Similar to the Wire in that there were no bad guys, and no good guys. I liked.

The original Manchurian Candidate with Lawrence Harvey was a good film, as was another of that ilk around that time called Seven Days in May starring Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas.

400 years since its publication - David Edgar has written a play about it also, which I'll make an effort to see!
