To be fair to Owen, he must be resting CYL at the moment. He's played nearly continually for two years. And we can all argue that he's a professional and should be used to it but bloody hell that's a lot of games.

I think it's a 'sparingly' approach with CYL at the moment. Plus giving other peeps the chance to show what they can do

I think you're right here, he needed a rest mentally if nothing else. But it would have been nice to see him on yesterday for the last twenty. Think if anyone could finish them off, CYL could...

Still, happy with the point, and a happy rested Korean.

Certainly the Toon do after what he did to them at the Reebok.
As I've mentioned before, the rumour is that Nolan and Elmander didn't exactly see eye-to-eye (or should that be wy-aye?). Mind its only a rumour.
After the 5-1 win I posted a criticism that Houghton had clearly sent Newcastle out to bully & intimidate Elmander and probably following reports about him from Nolan. .... itself fed by discussions between him & some contacts here maybe. This criticism was swamped by the "shocked & appalled sympathy vote" he got after being sacked.

A view I'd had with Elmander was that however talented he is he wasn't really brave enough for English football. That has, generally, altered this year.

It was clear last time that Newcastle came out with a planned process of kicking & intimidating him.

It was a little less obvious this time, but only a little.

For Nolan to suggest that Elmader milked it is typical & ridiculous. Taylor jumped in, over the ball, two footed, off the ground. It looked to me that he hit him on both insteps. There's a lot of diving these days (see Ashley Young hit the floor after his shoulder was touched yesterday ?) but this doesn't look like an example of it.

It does question the view that Newcastle are lining Elmander up for a Bosman in June though.
Not advocating mass-murder as an entirely positive experience, of course, but it had its moments.
"I understand you are a very good footballer" ... "I try".

The game had 17 chances for us. I wouldn't have said all 17 were worthwhile showing.

Newcastle looked more threatening going forward. When they went down to 10 men they became narrow and we had Petrov and Elmander on to exploit the width which sadly they didn't do. CYL must be tired for Coyle not to use him yesterday. The game was crying out for him to smash up the right wing, Elmander was getting round the back too easy but like most times did nowt when he was there.

Did anyone think if that Zat Knight had of played yesterday the dissallowed goal at the end would have been in? Very impressed with Cahill and Wheater at the minute. Both seem to have an understanding. One pushes up the other trusts him and follows.

Can't help feeling a bit gutted that we didn't get all 3 points yesterday but this is so true. We've come a long way.

Decent point in the grand scheme of things. I was surprised at the conservative nature of the subs, particularly given Coyle usually 'goes for it'. Save it for the cup I'm behind that approach. Need to keep klasnic fresh and interested against villa though I reckon.

good to see Steiner on the bench, have to say that at both full back we were weak-robbo has no right foot so kept trying to sweep tackle with his left. Alonso looked a bit crap not quite ready yet I feel.

Sturridge was good first Half - great skill to beat Enrique and good finish. Disappeared second half though. Thought muamba was good when it was 11 v11 but wasted it a bit in the second. Centre halves excellent.

Sort of glad Nolan got the goal out of his system, thought he wouldn't celebrate though? Disappointing comments re the sending off though Taylor wants locking up for that!

You don't half moan. You'd have something to complain about if we'd have gunned it and Newcastle had hit us on the counter. It's not two points dropped in the slightest.

Think that's just how he does it... we'd hate him if he weren't ours, and as I recall, we did. Still, kudos to him for operating in an unusual environment, and I don't (just) mean SJP.

Mixed feelings about this performance and result: we could have had more against the 10, and the bench alternatives were obvious, but for once we played it canny (like). The Skylights seemed to show Steinsson preparing to come on toward the end, while Klasnic was wearing gloves and about four tracksuits. Still, as noted, the result arrested a recent away league form reading LLLLLL. It's just that we don't feel like that kind of team at the moment: we seem capable of away wins (eg the Cup ones) and we have a strong bench. Better those kind of what-ifs than most of the others.

Intriguing to see how we do against Villa this Saturday – for them, too, four points below us and five above the drop-line. I'm confident we can overcome Ashley Young's usual goal.

With Villa( H) and Man U next up, followed by Birmingham, (both away) we still need to play really well and get some favourable results from the chasing pack. Right now our top half target is still feasible. Let's keep our heads down and concentrate on achieving that. Three points from the next three wouldn't be a disaster (although we can still hope).

The old "on paper cliche" I know but....

On paper Villa have a miles better team than we do!

Do they?

Miles better? Than Sturridge, Cahill, Wheater, Lee, Holden?

They've got some good players, but this is like the Everton argument. Ie, its bollox.
