That's a tad harsh Billy. I think LK has a fair point.

We've been "after" him since his Crewe days. We'll see.

If he had any brains - he would learn from Dalglish (as Shearer said he did at Blackburn)Gary the Enfield wrote:William the White wrote:Yep. Then he really could become a seriously good player

I often wondered where Shearer learned to have referees as his personal puppet
Now, I know
Dalglish taught him

It's from Tribal football so you can take this with a pinch of salt.

Hmmm I wonder if this has been "on for a while" as it might explain why Johan ain't been too keen on re-negotiating with us?
As much as I'd like him to stay and think he's a good player, Juve can't be that impressed with what they've seen in the last couple of games can they?

Well if its from the gospel Nixon, then we must also take into account that he says we offered him a one year extension.
Doesn't exactly sound to me like we're fighting to keep him.

He was offered a 1 year extension on reduced terms, I think thats been common knowledge, in fact I think OC just about confirmed it in an interview. This was just after the Newcastle home game IIRC.Lord Kangana wrote:Well if its from the gospel Nixon, then we must also take into account that he says we offered him a one year extension.

If its also reduced terms, then thats a message that we'll only keep him if others don't want him.

I think its more a message that we can't afford to pay him what we are doing on another long term deal. From whats been said, Coyle wants him, but finance and terms are the stumbling blocks.Lord Kangana wrote:If its also reduced terms, then thats a message that we'll only keep him if others don't want him.
I dare say if Juventus and the like are sniffing round we'll struggle.

Give over, we've offered him one year. We wouldn't be "struggling" if it was three. Its clearly a meh, whatever message to him.

"Other striking options" eh Nicko, you tease?
Juve are in disarray, Gigi Del Neri can't buy a win, papers want Vialli back but the board are unwilling to sack yet another manager. It's plausible that they're after him, and wouldn't be amazing if he turned them down. It's all very wait and see, and certainly not rush to give him a five-year sky-limit contract.

From whats been said even the "reduced terms" offer was still big wages, and would still be one of our top earners. The club would struggle to match that over a longer period is what I've been told.Lord Kangana wrote:Give over, we've offered him one year. We wouldn't be "struggling" if it was three. I mean some of it comes down to what they think he's worth in the current market. Gartside and Coyle will get it right and if Elmander can do better elsewhere then fair play.
Its quite simple that offering a new deal indicates they want to keep him. If they weren't bothered then there'd be no offer. When you're running a business with a 50M quid turnover you don't go round offer 3M a year contracts out for a laugh!

You also don't offer short contracts if you know there are also likely to be longer ones on offer. That is, if you're halfway serious to completing the deal.

Aye but you don't know that the 1 year deal wasn't a plan to suit everyone? Perhaps Elmander fancies longer term going back to Europe but might consider 1 year here?Lord Kangana wrote:You also don't offer short contracts if you know there are also likely to be longer ones on offer. My point being that all along Coyle has said we'd like to keep him but we can only offer what we can afford and of course its down to the player in the end.
